my 1 year old baby fell down 10 steps of stairs at my mom and dad's house last weekend. i was talking to my mom in her room while my 11 yr old nephew was playing with baby julla. we didn't realize that they went out the room to the stairs until it was too late. she rolled down the stairs like a ball. luckily, the steps alternately had a pair of my dad's shoes placed there. we think she rolled on the shoes so she didn't really get hurt. when he was picked up by my brother at the bottom of the stairs, she was sitting on her butt and didn't cry at all. mom said her guardian angel must've caught her or something. later, we looked out for signs that something may be wrong with her but she didn't get any fever or vomit. so, i think she's ok. i was afraid to tell her dad about at first. but when everything seemed ok, i told him and he just laughed it off saying our baby is real strong jsut like her dad. hah-hah! :-)

It's a good thing your child was ok. I always said to my partner that if we EVER ended up building the 2 storey place we wanted, that there would have to be safety gates, top & bottom of the stairs to stop things like this happening. I also think, it's always safer to have the kids, especially little ones, stay at the bottom since they cant fall up the stairs! At least you know at the age of 1 they don't tense up yet & their bones are still very rubbery - it helps to stop them from getting hurt!

that's right -- child-proof your home. as for my parents' house, well, it's been a long time since they had young ones so there were no safety measures used in the house.

Safety gates at the top of the stairs can be more dangerous than no gates at all. My son was about 1 1/2 when he climbed OVER the safety gate and fell down the stairs. He got 6 stitches in his head.

Both of my children fell down the steps when they were learning to crawl. My son was playing with a shoe at the top of the steps and I really didn't think he was that close to them, but all of the sudden he was on his way down. I was one step behind him the whole way and just couldn't grab him. Luckily our steps had carpet on them. He cried a little when he got to the bottom, no bruises, no blood, no bumps. It took me longer to recover than him! I didn't even know my daughter could crawl that far when she fell down the steps. I was watching my nieces that day (so I had 4 kids) and I was helping the older two with a craft. One minute my daughter was on one side of the room the next minute I heard bump, bump, bump, BUMP and a cry. She was laying face down, crying on the landing at the bottom of the steps (again, all carpeted). I couldn't believe she had made it over there. Again, no bruises, blood or bumps - and again, it took longer for me to recover. These incidents happened in different houses, but after each one, we put up a safety gate!

I have two neices, ages 1 and 3 who are as wild and curious as can be. THey often climb on everything they can find that would be dangerous. Luckily my house and there house are boths without many stairs as we live in one story houses. But i once at another sisters house my neice fell down the stairs doing a somersault down them, luckily she was caught by her father. that was a scare!

Stairs - Stairs in the house.
It's really very dangerous not to go after a young child if the house has stairs. Young children are always on the go and curious about everything and they try to do something without knowing the danger they are facing. Good that the skull of your child is not fractured or suffered any thing bad as a result of the fall.

One of my boys was just over 1 1/2 years old when he climbed OVER the baby gate upstairs. The kids were upstairs sleeping, and I had just come down for a second. I never imagined for a second that he would be able to climb the gate. We had to rush him to the emergency room where he ended up with 6 stitches in his head. I would never recommend putting a baby gate at the top of the stairs. It can be very dangerous.

yes, it could be more dangerous if they have to climb higher than the stairs and fall over.

My daughter fell down about 20 steps when she was 4. She had a busted nose and some bruises, thats is. Luckily we had just moved and there were boxes of clothes at the bottom. She landed in them. I have a 1 year old son who took his first stumble today. I am glad your Baby was ok. It is so scary when they are at the accident prone ages.

yup, i was so scared. good thing that she didn't seem hurt. i got more concerned about my nephew who almost broke down and said it was his fault. i told him it wasn't his fault, more like mine, coz i let them play by themselves.

That's pretty scary. I suggest you put on some baby gates around the stairs, or in the areas that they can possibly fall. Baby Toy Town offers a wide variety of baby gates and other baby safety accessories. Visit at: http://www.babytoytown.com
