Do You Feel Safer Using A Debit Card As Opposed To A Credit Card These Days?

I now use debit cards for secure shopping because credit cards and your information are so vulnerable these days...
What with debit cards being made available to everyone with no hassles...

I think it's important and wise to take one more step in the direction of Personal Security, and not just leave it up to somebody else...
So what do you think? Is ID theft a rising threat in your country? What steps are you taking to insure your financial transactions, and in some cities personal safety (Robbery)?

i personally don't have a debit card and am not so sure about the safety and stuff, but i think debit card is a bit more convenient than credit card because when you use your debit card, it deducts the money straight away from your bank account right? you just need to monitor and ensure that you don't use it excessively and overspend, same as credit card :) ..just that credit card you gotta pay when the bill arrives. i had the chance to use a debit card when i was studying in the UK. loved it. hehe.

Believe it or not, debit cards or less safe when it comes to fradulent charges. Most credit card companies will double check charges and confirm them with the card owner. For example, if someone steals your credit card number and orders something, then ships it to their house in Florida (when you live in New York), odds are your credit card company will be calling you to see what's going on. ALSO, if you find fraudulent charges on a credit card, YOU can call your company and put all the charges in question. Then they will investigate.
Unfortunately, a lot of debit cards do not work the same way. Even when they do, it is MUCH harder to argue out a charge with your bank than with a credit card company. Most banks will hold you accountable for all charges (trust me, this has happened to me, my hubby, my mom and a friend! At different banks!) They might correct it in the end, but most banks are just not as flexible as card companies when you question charges (in my opinion).

Debit card are much less safer than credit cards because they are tied directly to your bank account, and *your* money. It is far more safer to use a seperate credit card for online transaction, and online transactions only.
That way you can monitor it much better. If fraudulent charges show up, its the credit card's money that is being stolen, not the money in your personal bank account. Visa and Mastercard both offer a $50 maximum amount that you are responsible for in the case of fraud. Many credit cards offer $0 fraud liability and those are the ones that are best to use.
Never use your debit card if you can avoid it. You're just asking for someone to take *your* *real* money in *your* bank account.

I use only debit cards. I haven't had a credit card in years. I do think ID theft is rising. Where I work, I probably get ten phone calls a day from people who say they were victims of identity theft. What amazes me is that some people write their credit card numbers on their correspondence. Their letters are passed through many hands before I or one of the other 200 reps process their payment, and that is, if their correspondence even reaches us. I think of how damaging it could be to someone if one dishonest person gets that piece of correspondence.

I agree in total that using a debit card is safer compared to credit card. For now-a-days there is a great concern regarding theft of identity which makes the work of a card theft much easier.
I feel that the banks should raise the standards of the card like having a chip embedded in the card itself in which the details of the card holder can be secured and a mechanizm should be in place such that only the bank authority could access the details of the card and none else in case of a theft.

I prefer using my debit card to my credit card. In Canada debit cards are not affilliated with Visa or Master card, but in the USA they are. I have a Visa check card on my American bank account, and it works very well for me. I have the convenience of a credit card without spending someone else's money.

Recently I changed banks and as I was setting up my account to link my Credit Card to my online account I was aked if I wanted to register with a company to insure the contents of my wallet. For Au$37 if I lost or had my wallet stolen all cards in my wallent would be cancelled...not only cancelled but reissued. Even non bank cards like driver's license and so on. If I'm stranded without funds as a result they will enable me to pick up $1000. Pretty cool eh?

I had a prolem with identity theft years ago, and it sure caused problems for me. I have a different credit card problem now- I het a few months when I couldn't afford to make payments on them and each was maxed. So I got late payment charges which took me over my limit and then a charge for being over my limit, so that a five hundred dollar deby very quickly became an 1100 dollar debt and rising. three cards went to that uch and more- One I've paid off, one I have a settlement on and the other is pending. So much money and for what? Its horrible, I'll never do it again. With my debit card I can pay bills by phone or online. I learned too that using a checking account by phone to pay bills can result in the collection company re using the account information without your permisssion. Goodyear did that to me and hit my account in December every three days so that I had bad check charges well over a thousand dollars without anything getting paid. I had no money for christmas, no money for anything and had to have a bank manager track it down for me. Another hard lesson learned. Debit cards are the safest as long as you only shop with them, no atm, and use them for phone or online payments. I use money orders to send payments by mail.

Since my credit isn't the best I have nothing but debit cards and love them. I have 3 of them now and believe me they come in handy. One is from paypal and I get interest on the money I spend. Another is from Chacha where I'm a guide and it's so easy to put money into it just by working there a few hours a day. The 3rd I had to pay a fee to get and they charge $1 for every transaction and it's no my favorite but I seldom use it. I've never had a problem with fraud so I must do something right. All I know is I'm very careful with them so it must be helping.
