The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!
This month and next Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate
in the closet approach of the two planets in unrecorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's tugs on Mars and perturbs it's orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.
The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon)the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of - 2.9 and will appear 24.11 arc seconds wide at a modest 75 power magnification. Mars will look as full as the moon to the naked eye. It will be easy to spot at the beginning of August as it rises in the east at about 10 pm to reach it's azimuth at about 3 am.
By the end of August when the two planets are closest Mars will rise at nightfall and reach it's highest point at about 12:30 am. It will get brighter during the month.
Please share this with your children and grandchildren as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN !

Thanks for the information, I hope you will remind us when it is getting close to the best days. Still, even at this very close approach I don't think there will be any noticeable affects like the Moon produces tides, Mars will still be too far away. I don't believe the Moon, much less Mars, effects peoples behavior. Some people may think it does and thus by thinking that they produce a behavior themselves. But, if someone had never heard of the idea, then it would not happen.

the spectacle this event causes in the sky will be enough to sell tickets. the weather should be cooperative for the event. we tracked the moonrise last night, 8-2-07 2100PST, as we were driving home. just beautiful in its own right.
