My husband has an odd sense of humor. Some say strange, But I think it is part of his charm.
Tonight he asked me a question I couldn't or wouldn't answer, but I told him I would pose it to all of you.
He wants to know if Maltipoos are Maltese/Poodle mixes, Terripoos are Terrier/Poodle mixes, Cockapoos are Cocker Spaniel/Poodle mixes, Labradoodles are Labrador/Poodle mixes and so on, what is a toy poodle mixed with? A toy? What kind? Please help me give the poor man an answer so he can get some sleep tonight.

You're husband was joking right? lol
To answer your question seriously, I think toy poods are just called that because they are small. Perhaps whoever created the name thought of them as the size of a toy?
Sounds like you all have some interesting converations! lol
It also seems that myLot is the perfect place for you. I love posting all the things that I have pondered over the years here!
I think I've had about every one of my "life questions" answered here.
I've about run out of things to ponder now.

Yes, my husband was joking, I think you actually caught his joke and were the only one to do so on two different sites. Plus you gave me an excellent answer to give him. Thank You so much miamilady.

Well, to be honest, i don't think toy poodles are mixed with anything, unless they mixed a giant poodle with a standard one, or they simply modified the genes so the poodle they had wouldn't grow to be the same as the other breeds.
Although, i don't think we call dogs crossed with poodles, any of the names you mentions - except the labradoodle.
Terripoos dont really work coz a Maltese is a terrier so technically that would have to be a terripoo too! I also think cocker spaniels x poodles are called cockerdoodles here :) Weird huh? Maybe they just didn't like th idea of adding Poo to the end of everything!
All the other mixes are still just mongrel cross breeds! Although i have noticed a lot of pet stores here like to try & give them funny names!
Anyway, chances are the toy poodle has been either genetically modified or inbred somewhere along the way to get that size - shih tzus, pugs, pekingnese & funny little dogs like that were all inbred at some point to get them to look the way they do too :)

I would think a toy poodle is when a runt poodle male mates with a regular sized female poodle. It is a regular poodle only shorter. I do not think there is any other breed. It could also be when two runts mate with each other. Runts are usually not as fertile as other dogs, so I would think the first scenerio more likely. I am not a dog expert, so I do not know.

I am not sure but I think a toy would be a mix of a regular female poodle and a male tea cup poodle. You couldn't make that combination with a female tea cup because they wouldn't survive a pregency with a much larger dog. But hey, I am just guessing.

I know a poodle breeder and she told me that Poodle crosses are as popular as pure breed poodles. The one most people ask for is a Cocker Spaniel/ Poodle. They look charming and fluffy just like a teddy bear. I have seen a gorgeous one that lives in my area. He has a lovely personality and looks so very cute. The breeder I know is different to most other poodle breeders in that she likes to try and breed non standard colors. The dog she sold me is very sweet indeed. He is white with black patches and a few bits of apricot on his feet and around his nose.
