What do we know about the SPIRIT inside each of us?

There is so much discussion about Religion, Heaven, Hell, Sin, Repentance, Forgiveness, Love, Charity, etc. All Gospel principles. Ultimately, however, it's all about the spirits inside each human being. When we depart this life, the body goes back to dust and the spirit goes to the next world. What do we really know about our spirits? Where does it come from? What is made of? How does it communicate? What is its gender? How old is it? How does it connect to our bodies? Any ideas?
