Normally we will cough when having a cold or after just recovering from a bad cold.
Once during the meeting in the conference hall I had a slight cough so I covered my mouth with a handkerchief when coughing.
But later on I coughed even more badly with tears coming out. I tried not to, but I couldn’t help coughing again. It was really embarrassing for making the unpleasant noise so I made a quick move to the rest room.
When were you having your last cough?
Do you have the experience of coughing in the public and what would you do?
Do cough drops always make you drowsy?
Do cough lozenges like”Fisherman’s Friend” etc. could really relieve a cough?

Hi dear Athrun, well you are really an understanding and courteous guy, as you know that the sound make by coughing is unpleasant for others and we do feel embarrass if we were to keep on coughing in front of others. Yeah, especially when you are with your loved one. I am sure she will feel lonely if you leave her alone and I believe she won’t mind you to cough in front of her. .

Hi dear friend, nice and happy to know that you are such a courteous young guy. It is not decent to keep on coughing at the meeting. The continuous coughing noise is really disgusting and could make other feel unpleasant as well. I also consider this is not hygienic coughing badly in the public.

At a meeting, when I have to cough, I would like to walk away without letting the others know that I am coughing. I think that it is polite to walk away for a cough. I usually cough when I feel something in my throat.

Oh, my dear friend, jisir,
Sometimes it is rather embarrassing to cough amid a meeting or a gathering but it is understandable as coughing is an involuntary reflex.
If you feel that something is in your throat the best way is to cough it loud so that the “something” could be pushed out from your throat. Of course this is normally done when are sure that there is no body around.

You are welcome jisir.
Thanks for your concern over the care of my throat. I would always try not cough hard, shout loud, to take hot and spicy food...
Here there are lots of hot and spicy foods that are really delicious. They are pretty nice to eat but they often made me coughing lol as its smell got into the lungs accidentally.

If I cough slightly I usually cover my mouth with hands. But if I continue to cough badly especially in the theatre or amid a meeting, I will excuse myself and head to the rest room. Usually we cough when we feel the ichiness in our throat and I think lozenges will help reduce the urge of coughing.

Hi cheongyc my dear friend,
If you were to have a cough amid a meeting or social gathering it is polite to excuse yourself and have a move.
In case you couldn't escape im time you could always cough with your mouth covered with a handkerchief or tissue paper. It is understandable as coughing is a natural reflex and couldn't be helped from doing it.

But I don't have the habit of carrying hankerchief or tissue paper around. So the only thing I could use to cover my mouth are my hands LoL. Luckily recently I seldom cough and I am realy glad about it. Previously I was having some prolonged coughing period and it took me up to half a year to recover from such minor illness. Sometimes it's slightly embarrassing to be coughing in the confined space eg in the elevator.

Hi dear cheongyc, sometimes we need hankerchief or tissue paper badly. So it is wise to have either one in the pocket or bag. Since you have both washing machine and dryer in your apartment, I think you don’t have to worry much how to dispose the dairy used handkerchief. I agree that to cough in the elevator or face to face is quite embarrassing. Anyhow I am so happy to know that you have discovered from the chronic coughing.

I always catch a cold and get my share of coughs from the past. Now, I'd like to prevent rather than cure. So I make sure I take my ascorbic acid regularly, get enough rest when possible, and eat nutritious food. I used to have weak immune system. I don't get coughs often now. I also avoid crowded areas which seemed to have coughs from people. I used to be like you, that happened to me coughing up so bad and it was the right thing that you did to cover your mouth and going to the restroom. "Fisherman's Friend" is good, it doesn't make you drowsy but it doesn't really make your cough go away. What it does, is cool your throat and eases the itchiness. You need medication for cough and a prescription from your doctor would be better. Good luck, get some rest, take vitamin C and eat food with loads of these good stuff. Take care!

It is always believed that vitamin C with nutritious food and sufficient rest could be the best treatment for illness.
I really believe that you could improve your immune system through proper care of your health like taking nutritious food, following doctor’s advice and having regular physical exercise daily.
I’m glad to learn that you had improved your health and seldom get cough now.
Thanks you as so kind to give me the valuable advice as how to keep away from cough.

I would do what you have done too. When I was in college, we were having discussions and my cough started in the way you described it and I feel so embarrassed, I drink water but it doesn't help. I have to go out until it calmed down. "Fisherman's friend" is also good but I just drink water.

Its better to walk out if you are at worinkg place and specially when you are meeting or conferences. It distracts others and hey get disturbed. I don't remember when I had serious cough last time. The best remedy for me is 'sitopaladi churna' by Dabur. When taken with honey it gives relief from cough and it also tastes very good..lol..my children pretend to cough when I am taking it as they also want to taste it once.

Yeah, eshaan, coughing is considered rather annoying especially amid certain formal gathering as it could disturb others in the area.
Your magic medicine “sitopaladi churna” sounds rather fantastic from its wordings and I have never heard of.
I, though very much older than your children, even couldn’t help myself from thinking to have a taste of it, after you had added some honey to it lol...

i do use a handkerchief, but most time when i got a bad cold,i will stay home,so i dont have the experience of coughing again and again in public.maybe this is because i am still a student, that i can take my time.but after work,i guess,if i was in a meeting,i can't just go home,a rest room is the best choice.and i think it is a good custom to do that.

To be a student you could enjoy much freedom and privacy to stay home or in your college hostel. You would hardly have chance to be have meeting in the public so you don’t have the opportunity to experience coughing amid the public gathering.
Yeah, you are right. It’s a good practice to mind our manners in any social gathering. But it’s quite understandable as we couldn’t help coughing at certain circumstances.

It’s nice to have a move from the area so as to avoid the embarrassing situation when we could not help coughing.
Yes, severe cold in the winter time could cause problems of lungs and throat as we inhale much chilled and dusty air into our respiratory system. Normally it won’t be matter if it’s not cause by diseases.
I did experienced nose bleeding in cold dry winter when I was having my vacation in a temperate country few years ago.

When I cough it tends to be very bad and can go on for a while, this is why I try to leave the room as soon as possible and try to get a drink of water. This doesn't hhappen very often, but when it does it can be very embarrassing and frustrating. The last time I remember this happening I was in a lecture, I had to leave in the middle of the lecture, which I am sure disturbed the other students, but not as much as my staying there would have!
I think cough sweets can help to sooth the throat, but they don't work completely for me.

It is really true that taking water and cough sweet could help to sooth the irritation due to the cough. But this is only a temporary measure and couldn’t do a complete cure for it.
If it is a slight and occasional cough in the public it is excusable. If it persists it is wise to leave the area for some fresh air and to avoid the embarrassing situation.
