Losing Your Eyesight

My DIL scratched her eyeball while searching for wood for a campfire. A stick scratched her cornea. Her vision from her right eye is now very weak. She can see light from the eye, but no clear vision. The eye doctor said that there is some fluid build up and they may need to drain it. That grosses me out to think about that one! The doctor put novacaine in her eye and she can now open her lid. I guess it caused her too much pain to open her eye before this. She has drops that she needs to place in her eye every 2 hours. She has another appointment next week to check on the progress of the eye. She was told that she may lose some of the vision in the injured eye. Sad thought. I have always been careful when walking in a wooded area. I doubt I will be venturing for walks in the woods anytime soon.

Well I once my pug scratched my eye with her paws by accident, she did miss the cornea, but man did it hurt like the dickens. It took it years to heal as well. Whenever my eyes became dry, the slightest movement reopened the scratch and it hurt just the same as it did when it was first injured. I know am very aware of what comes near my face, including babies and animals.

My grandbabies have often clipped me close to the eye. Scarey when you think of what damage they could do.

Thanks Terry. I am very worried about her. I told her that she should stop camping for a while. She has been hurt more than once this year.

I am sorry to hear that she may lost part of her vision in that eye. That is so sad and hope they are wrong and that she will be able to see fully from that eye. We do need to be careful walking in the woods with the sticks and stones and everything else out there that could cause problems. Hopefully those drops will help her eye.

Being an optician, there is a lot I know about this. However, this is a good posting for those that do not have a clue. Thank you sugar.

I have disliked wearing glasses from time to time, but in situations like that, in the woods, they do provide some protection for the eye. Tell your dil we are thinking of her, praying for her, and tell her to be compliant to the doctors orders.

I once had an injured cornea, the cherry tree hit me back while I was picking cherries. I could not see good at all and it did hurt a lot for days. The eye doctor gave me drops and a bandage, I was not to see with the injured eye for a week. After a week the very distorted vision improved, resting the eye helped a lot and the medicine that contained among others an antibiotic helped me. I was examined again after a while and one almost could not see the scar any more. All I recall today is: It was a very painful injury and I had very blurred vision. My eyesight is ok again. I wear glasses anyhow.

I have sarcoid and diabetes,a bad combination for eyes most definitely, it has caused me to be blind for most of this pastyear, four "draining" surgeries later, two on each eye, i can finally see again. The interior fluid in both my eyes has actually been replaced with a saline type solution.I'll do whatever I have to , to keep my sight, I am an artist/writer, and it was pure hell to not be able to see.Good luck to her!!

I have sarcoidosis in my eyes, it is a huge amount of pressure that only effects one eye at a time, and can be controlled with prednisone drops, has she been tested for this? http://www.eyemdlink.com/Condition.asp?ConditionID=31

My mother is going blind with glaucoma. Normally they can cure this, but it doesn't seem to be working with her. She also has this terrible build up of pressure in one eye, that they can't seem to find the cause of.

I am so sorry to hear this about your DIL. Even being careful in the woods doesn't always prevent these kind of things from happening. I hope that her eye heals soon and she doesn't loose any vision or if she does its a very slight lost.

I hope your DIL doesn't loose any vision in that eye. Eye injuries can be very painful. I remember having to put drops in my sons eyes every two hours when he got hit in the eye with one of those thistle plants. I could have killed the kid that did that to him.

Oh no- that stinks- I'm in the woods alot- We use a wood stove and cut wood every year to supply the wood for the year- there are branches everywhere- We also ride 4-wheelers through our woods all the time- I can't tell you how many times I've been struck in the face with a branch- OUCH-- I wear glasses so none have actually hit my eye- My daughter wears a helmet but nothing over her eyes- How scary is that- I hope you DIL is ok soon with no loss of vision!

She is actually doing much better. She said she can see more clearly today than she did a couple of days ago. She keeps putting the drops in her eye and she said it seems to be helping.

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter-in-law's eye, and trust that it'll get better. I can relate, as a number of years ago, my daughter (who was just little at the time) accidentally scratched my cornea. I remember the pain being bad, and having eye drops etc. The Dr. said I was very fortunate because of the size and location of the scratch, and my vision cleared completely, and everything totally healed up. Please let us know how she's doing.

Hi, sorry to hear about your DIL, and i think she should take it easy and rest a while and not exert and work much. And maybe things wouldnt get as they seem they would and all would turn out to be alright after the doctor sees her, so wait , pray and watch . Don't think the sight will go or weaken.. I would suggest to remain positive as only when you are positive do you spread positive enrgys around you, which would help healing the eyes too. And please don't worry about going to the woods, accidents when and if they have to happen, can happen any place, its Gods will, just pray all will be well. :)

Freaky things are bound to happen at any given time no matter where we are. I am sorry she has been given this to experience. I hope that vision does return and at least comfort. She will be able to adapt to one eye in time if that comes to pass. Not sure how it happened unless walking through trees or something. I like to think that wearing glasses help to prevent this sort of thing. No matter now, I am selling my property with the 13 acres of trees as woods and will have to hope to return to the country someday. Just different dangers where I live now I guess. Good luck to your daughter in law and best wishes for all of you.

I think I told you how this happened to my daughter a couple of years ago. My step son threw a book sat her eye. She was blinded for about half an hour. The Doctor gave us drops to administer & she had to wear a ptach. She did fully recover her excellent vision. I hope the same happens for your SIL. It sound like hers is worse than it was for my daughter.

These things will happen, Elusive, but doctors are so smart these days that I'm sure they will do all they can for her. I used to have a recurring problem with pain in one of my eyes. The eye doctor gave me drops to put in it and I have not been bothered in many years. Just pray for the best outcome. I will be praying also.
