Lizzie's Bedtime Habits

Lizzie, my black lab, has some strange bedtime habits. She comes and bumps my elbow until I stop whatever I am doing. It does not matter if I am on the computer or sewing or watching tv. She makes a certain whine that is different from when she wants to go out or when she wants a treat. So I get up and go to the bedroom. She follows. I turn the light on and tell her good night. She heads toward her spot. But first she has to check behind the closet door that sits ajar. Then she has to look out the window for a moment. She turns and looks at me as if to say good night. Then she goes behind the bed and lays down. I wait a minute or so. Tell her good night one more time. Then I turn the light off and walk out. Does your dog have any bedtime habits? Does your dog communicate their needs to you?

I don't have a dog, because the space here is too confined, and it wouldn't be fair on the animal, but they certainly have some amusing little habits and rituals, don't they? Your dog sounds really cute. Brightest Blessings.

You should get a dog. Maybe a small dog or medium size dog. Well, first you should get a bigger place so you can have a dog.

It would be good company for me, but I don't know. It's worth having a think about it I guess.

Hello Royal52gens, I do not have dogs but I am familiar with some habits that animals have that we humans aren't always aware of. Recently I had the pleasure of seeing dolphins. I was standing by the pool where the dolphins were swiming and everyone was told to place their hands gently in the water and the dolphins will choose which person they want to come too. I had one dolphin who came over to me and came up out of the water and let me stroke her back. It was amazing. The next day we went back to the dolphins and again I placed my hand in the water and a dolphin came over and again I stroked the back of the dolphin. The care taker of the dolphin and their trainer came over and asked me if I had any kind of disability. I told her yes, I have Cerebral Palsy. She smiled at me and said, She thought I did. I asked her how she knew and she stated that the dolphins will go over first to those who are disabled or sick because they can sense those with special needs. I was wondering because when my daughter and son placed their hand in the water, no dolphin came to them. This just shows that animals have a special sense that we humans don't have. Recently on the news, there was a story of a cat named Oscar who lived in a nursing home and when a patient was getting ready to die or become very sick, Oscar would go into their room and sit with them. Seeing eye dogs and other dogs have been known to save the life of their owner because of their special sense of caring. Maybe Lizzie's bedtime habits are for your purpose. The fact that she checks behing the closet door she is looking out for you. Also looking out the window before she goes to sleep is almost as if she is guarding you and watching out for you. Taping your elbow is getting your attention as if to tell you 'come on let's make sure your safe so she can go to sleep. Just a thought. Dogs are very smart as well as many other animals. I never knew that dolphins were so smart. We live and learn. Take care, Jadona2006

Yes, dogs are very smart and intuitive. I have never been that close to a dolphin. She definitely knows how to tell me what she wants.

My black lab goes to bed on her own, but then comes back to check on us every 20 minutes or so until we finally go to bed. She comes into where ever we are, and sighs really loud and sits on my feet. We just moved, so she hasn't got her routine set exactly here yet, but at the old house, as soon as I would stand up from the computer, she would run to the stairs and wait to see if I was going downstairs to let her out. As soon as I stepped on that top stair, our terrier would jump out of our bed and they would both be at the back door waiting for me to let them out. When I let them back in, they would both run up the stairs and jup in bed. They figured they could get the best spot if they beat me I suppose. Our terrier always sleeps on my husband's pillow when he isn't in bed (he works nights), and our lab sleeps right beside me with her head on my feet.

Lizzie also does that sighing thing. She has been doing it a lot lately. The girls have been gone from home for two weeks. I think she is missing them.

I have 2 labs, one of them usually beats us to bed. His goal in life is to make sure the bed stays firmly on the ground. He is 8 1/2, when we got him, we were told his life expectancy was less then a year. He fooled everyone. The other one, the biological father of the above dog, is 11. He does not come to bed when told it is bedtime. He waits until I am in bed, then walks throught the house, I guess doing a bedtime check. Then he comes to the bedroom and sleeps next to the bed by me, but thankfully on the floor. If I stay up to late, he just stands and stares at me, he can stare very loud.

Lizzie likes to take her naps on one of my daughter's beds. She does not get in my bed though. She sleeps behind my bed. I think I can hear that stare from here. LOL

Dogs are comforting. I like that when I am home alone they are on alert. They let me know right away if anyone comes into the driveway. They keep me safe as well as entertained.

That's too funny! I don't have a dog at the moment but my cats have some unusual habits when I get ready for bed. For one thing, when I go brush my teeth, they want me to run the water in the sink so they can drink from it. Then, when I get in bed, I have a couple of cats who cuddle up by my legs and one next to my head. Then I have one who jumps up on my right side and puts her head next to my shoulder for me to scratch. Once I turn out the light, one likes to come up and knead my arm and lick the inside of my elbow area. But I don't think any of mine have the unique routine your dog does.

Congratulations on reaching 500 postings!!! Yes, Lizzie has some unusual routines and habits. Gizmo has some of his own also. He likes to lay on the floor behind me when I am brushing my hair and teeth in the morning. I am trying to get ready for work and he wants me to take the time to rub his belly. It is 3:30 in the morning!! But he wants the attention no matter what time the clock says.

Several of my cats like to drink from the bathroom faucet. This is fine, but one of them likes to stick her head under it and when she comes up, she shakes water all over the bathroom. I get drenched every time almost if I can't get out before she does it. Then, there's Miracle who waits until I come out of the shower and for me to wrap my hair in a towel and get dried off then he wants me to pick him up and love on him for a minute or two. It's the only time he lets me hold him. And, then there's Duchess who is my alarm clock when I sleep through my electric one. She comes and kneads me until I get up. One morning, she couldn't get me up and I heard her crying through my earplugs and finally woke up. It scared her so bad that she followed me around all morning and put her paws up on my chest when I came out of the shower to make sure I was okay. She's so cute! Anyway, enough pet stories for now.

Now don't you go forgetting the part where Gissi steals your pillow. Maybe you should hide your pillow. That would keep Gissi guessing for awhile.

That is very adorable! My dog, Haley, is an outside dog. The only communication we get from her is she will whine if we go outside and don't immediately play with her. Or aren't constantly playing with her too LOL.

Lizzie and Gizmo love to play in the house and outside. They also like to go for long walks and take naps. Lizzie can be annoying. She likes to go out on her chain just to get some fresh air and lay on the porch.

Oh that is so darn sweet! Yes my beagle comes to me to order the others for her needs, LOL. She likes my oldest girl to take her out, she is happy go lucky when she does. If someone else does it, she drops her head and gives this grunt like "Darn". Then she likes my youngest to feed her, she does the same thing if someone else does it. But what ever she wants she comes to me and sets down in front of me until I say "what", then she dances around. When I holler for one of the girls she will start barking at them like, “listen to what she said”.

Now that is interesting. She does not communicate directly with anyone but you. She has learned how to get what she needs or wants. And she has a reaction if the result is something she did not want or expect. Very interesting way to communicate.

Izzy is ALWAYS in Bed! LOL It is her favorite place in the house. When it is Tara's bedtime, she comes in and gives me a goodnight kiss. Then I tell Izzy to go to bed with Tara. She gets up and goes into Tara's room. She gets to come back in my room after Tara goes to sleep. If Tara leaves the door open Izzy comes back as soon as Tara is completely asleep. If she closes the door, sometimes she stays in there all night. If Tara is not home, Izzy can tell when it is my bed time. As soon as I stand up she jumps up and gets under the covers. She likes to be covered up all the time unless it is over 85 degrees she is hudled under a blanket somewhere most of the time. So she has one on the couch and on our beds so she can get warmed up. She also knows when it is time for me to go to work, She is on high alert. She knows that if I put on my shoes, or pick up my purse, I am leaving and will RUN as fast as she can to the door and wait for me there. I usually take her to the sitter with Tara, and she HATES to stay home. I let her out to do her thing before we leave and if she gets the wrong idea on my days off and thinks I am leaving she will NOT come back in! She sits beside the van waiting for us to open a door so she can jump in and gop!

Wow, your Lizzie is an excellent communicator. Lucy seems to be good sometimes but at other's it's like she doesn't have a clue. Sometimes in the middle of the night she wakes me and if she's "anxiously" licking her lips it means she need to go to the toilet, but sometimes she cheats and the minute I'm out of sight she's over the fence and away on an adventure.

Our Cat - This is our cat, Reeces. She loves to come get her ears scratched before she settles in for bed.
That is so cute. I don't have a dog right now, but none of the dogs I have had in the past have done anything such as that. Our cat likes to come up and nudge my elbow until I scratch her ears for a while before she settles in for bed, but doesn't have much of a bedtime routine aside from that.

It is better do not allow her to touch you when you are doing something, that will be a good habit.Let her touch your leg with her tail even it needs to be.

You have a different view. I don't understand this view. We are very loving with our dogs. We brush them and hug them. They in turn hug us back. When there is a storm, they sit in our laps and we comfort them. You do understand that Lizzie is a dog, right?? I could never not allow her to touch me. That is one way she communicates to me. Would you consider not allowing your child to speak to you??? I think not. I allow my dogs to "talk" to me.

If you don't touch your animals and interact with them then you are missing so much! I am constantly hugging and kissing my cats and they in turn are just as affectionate with me. I love them dearly and would never want to avoid touching them or having them not touch me. There are times that I've been upset about something and they come and comfort me and let me know they love me. You must have a sad life not to interact with your animals. Maybe you don't have animals and if not you are missing out on so much!
