This story takes place in Mansfield LA. There was a truckstop that had an ATM machine that was giving too much money. The owner of the truckstop said that she unplugged the ATM when she found out that it had been giving $20 bills instead of $5 bills like it should have.
But imagine this every morning when she would come in it would be plugged back in.
She said she found out originally that it was giving out the wrong bills because she overheard the truckers talking.
The machine spit out an extra $7,000 dollars to a total of 26 people, not to each one but split between them.
The authorities say they have names and all that of the people who took the extra money.
I personally would feel guilty about it. I would have to turn it in. not only thast i think the fear of jail would keep me from taking it.. I have never been and I never want to go.

This has happened before. Banks don't worry about it too much because there is a record of everyone who was given the extra money. Basically the people are just billed for it.

The fact the people kept the money wasn't the bank's fault, it was a choice the people made themselves. It's not their money, they know it's not their money, so if they spent it, too bad for them.

I think they should just cut their losses and make sure whoever loads the atm is doing it right. because that is why they got too much the money was the wrong denomiation. Or in the wrong spot.
Thanks again for posting.

That has to totally suck though, could you imagine a bil from your bank to the tune of $7,000.00? I hqate getting the $25.00 over draft charges especially when they are unjustified. Yeah I'm sure they all have records and WILL find the people but my question is will they be prosicuted for something that was not their fault? I think I read it right in saying yes they will, but I am not sure.

Well sure, it would be great to get free money but it's sad that the people who just took the money and ran from that ATM didn't use their brains and realize that there is a trail that leads right to them and where they live! ATM machines not only know who you are from the cards, there is generally a camera on them too so there you are, they totally know exactly who you are. So I would have reported to the owner of the ATM that there was a problem with it because I know that they would find out anyway that I had taken money that wasn't mine and kept it. So yes, I would have been a goody two shoes and reported the problem.

I would have reported it too, but only because I fear jail and prison so much that I would probably pee my pants with fear before I even left the parking lot... lol

To me what's wrong with it, going to jail..lol. I don't think I even check the denomination I just count to see how many are there.
The people who took off with the money will be prosicuted though so that is the onlky thing that sucks about this story because like you I agree it is not their fault.
