in the late 1800's american circuses grew immensely popular and evolved into the three ring format, where several acts would perform in different rings at the same time.the audiences became so large that the talking clown could no longer be heard.clowns then began to rely on "sight" gags, pantomime, and slapstick comedy.the "walk-around",or moving parade of clowns doing non-verbal gags and stunts, was inspired by the addition of the race course or hippodrome track that surrounded the three rings in many american circuses.
