A Car - What type of fuel do you use to run your car?

I was running my car on petrol until a year ago when I got a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) kit fitted to my car. Now I run my vehicle only on CNG, as it has many advantages. 1. It is a clean burning fuel as compared to petrol and has less emissions. 2. It is now available at many locations, hence its availability is now much easier as compared to 2-3 years back. 3. It is also easy on my pocket. Which is the fuel you use to run your car/vehicle?Is it petrol/diesel/CNG/LPG/Battery or any other unconventional fuel that I am not aware of?

I run my car on petrol, but it is fitted with a Catalytic converter and had an engine management system that ensures it run cleanly.

What do you mean with an "engine management system"? Sounds intriguing.

An engine-management system consists of a computer (like a black box) set inside my car, that is connected to sensors all over the engine components that automatically keeps adjusting itself in response to engine load, throttle (accelerator) position, and spark plug timing, so that the exhaust gases are at their cleanest due to efficient mixture of air and petrol. Other (stray) gases than come from the engine itself, are re-circulated through the air-intake system and burned again in the combustion chamber. These systems cannot be adjusted at all, if a component goes wrong, the car has to be taken to the local garage where it is connected to a larger computer that detects the faulty component so that it can be replaced. Well, that's the best way I understand it.. It's like a home computer that has programs running each part of the car. It also controls the anti-lock braking system and air-conditioning.

i still use unleaded gasoline. Im not sure my car warranty will allow for me to install an LPG kit (thats what some taxi use in manila). By the was is LPG or CNG safe? Isnt it more prone to problems like explosions?

No, you don'e have to worry about explosions unless you put a big hole in the cylinder - they're very safe & very good for the environment as the emissions are much lower than normal fuels!

thats good to know. Coz sometimes when i use a cab that happens to run on LPG, i can often smell the gas. Its gets me really scared that a small spark could cause disaster. For me to smell the fumes, thats not normal is it?

In my country today they are mixing biodiesel into gasoline. Some cab use Liquefied Petroleum Gas for the fuel. The other one saves gas consumption and emissions. Cool huh!

Well economically and envoirnmently I think that CNG is a very good fuel to use instead of petrol. Our family has a car that runs very well on CNG and we have a jeep thats on diesel. I really don't like the smell of LPG and it is not as safe as CNG.

Dear Ranjeetkolarkar, I do not have any car of my own. I do my office car which runs on petrol. Though CNG is available but they have not changed to CNG. I hope in due course they will change it. At present it is running petrol.

I'm only aware of three choices here in Alberta Can. We have gasoline, diesel and propane. A very high percentage of drivers use gasoline like myself. I do own a truck that uses propane, but i don't drive it because my insurance is high. Propane burns cleaner, it is cheaper, by about 40 cents, but it is not that popular. One reason is that a lot of garages don't sell it. Take care Ranjeetkolarkar.

Seeing that I have no idea about anything other than gasoline- that is what I use- I go to the gas station- and cringe each time my car gets low- I can’t wait for the hybrid cars to become more popular- I’m in line for one of those babies!

I use 'regular' unleaded gasoline. Stations here in US offer 'premium' and 'regular' gasoline. The premium is supposed to assist one's car in running more smoothly and be better for the vehicle, but with the gas prices soaring, most are choosing to use 'regular.'

We use unleaded petrol here. Ethanol is available a few towns away and further away you cvan get fuel with an etanol additive. Diesel is readily available too. Premium unleaded is preferred by those with newer more expensive cars but it is very expensive.

My new car only uses regular unleaded gasoline. It will not take anything else. If I use any other type of gas it will ruin the car. The car was made specifically for regular unleaded, which is fine with me since it costs less than the higher grades. I think many people are using regular unleaded since many cars now are being made for the cheaper brand of gas.

I use unleaded gasoline to run my car. With gas prices, I wish that I could convert to something else, but I am not sure I could afford it if something was available.

I took the easy route. Been using my legs to walk and bike everywhere. When I do use the bus, they are all biodiesel in my county. I live in a smaller town only a 2 mile walk from work (I used to live even closer). If I had to have a car because I moved back to the boonies, I would probably go with a battery powered (which would be recharged from my own solar panels). Can't really get cheaper than that, and some of the new models are no more expensive than regular cars (especially once you consider the cost of gas). It's great to hear what different fuels and attitudes exist around the world, by the way - great discussion!

That sounds so nice. My car is pretty old as I get attached to it and don't want to trade it in until things start falling off...you know, as long as it is running good, it is like a friend. But a so-called "hybrid" car sounds like a good idea for the next one. Do you know if the CNG kits work on one of those? Does your natural gas fuel fit in the same space as the old-fashioned gas? Does the car run longer on the same amount. Please tell us all more about this technology!

mine runs on diesel. i have always wonder, if a car runs on CNG, if you run out of gas, how do you fill it up? say if mine suddenly runs out of gas, i can refill it using a jerry can. do you like have to push or tow the car all the way to the petrol station?

OK come back to mine, it runs on NGV which until now I don't know what does it means? very cheap...it costs me for only MYR0.62/litre and I live in Malaysia. Can somebody tell me what is NGV? www.ncs.cjb.net
