What is the myth about picking white/gray hair?

I have just noticed that a certain part of my head is getting bold due to white hair picking. I am going gray on the side of my temples. I pick them and pick them. I feel itchy if I don't plug those gray hair out. Is it true that the white hair will come in double? Should I leave it alone, or just go ahead and remove them? I guess I am not growing old gracefully.
