How many electrical appliances do you have running in your home right now?

This evening, as we were getting ready to go outside one last time, I walked through the back room and noticed that the window air conditioner was still on. Funny since no one was actually in the room. And, realizing that this probably wasn't an isolated waste of electricity, I did a quick mental tally of all the appliances that I was sure would be running in the house at the same time. It was not a pretty picture.
At that time we had all of the following things using electricity: three window air conditioners, one fan, the kitchen exhaust fan, the bathroom exhaust fan, three light bulbs, one computer, two TVs, two DVD players, one VCR, microwave and one giant energy draining refrigerator! Good grief! No wonder our electric bill went up by $50 this past month. What a waste of money and electricity. Needless to say it was an eye-opening experience.
So, how about you? How many electrical appliances are running in your home at this moment? How many appliances could you easily unplug without being inconvenienced? Could you live with just two or three energy using objects in your life and get rid of everything else?

The items I have plugged in and left on are the fridge, the microwave, the dishwasher, the tv and cable in the main lounge and the washer and dryer. Everything else is plugged in but not turned on. I just turned off our aircon this morning as it was freezing cold. It will stay off most of today as its nice and cool in our home.

Hello beautyqueen26,
I think we depend too much on these electrical appliances nowadays. I, for example, don't think can live without these electrical appliances. I have televisions, one desktop, one laptop, a fridge, a microwave, two table fans, one standing fan, an air-conditioner, don't-know-how-many-bulbs, a reading lamp, a hi-fi, a small radio, a DVD player, a VCD player and many more...*smiles*
But the ones that will be on all the time are the fridge, the desktop and the fans and air-conditioner. That is what I can think of...
Lucky that my electrical bill is not as much as yours. It is cheaper in my country though... maybe one quarter from your bill *smiles*

two alarm clocks, fridge on the 'recommended' setting, water heater, microwave (not actually going but plugged in), A/c which is a treat to have on since i never use it, tv,a lamp and oh yeah the computer. we have cut back on what we use by taking colder showers, hand washing dishes, using the A/C less plus we make sure we turn off every light when not in use and yet our energy consumtion has doubled in the last month. im confused.

right now i got something around 8 appliances running. sometimes i unplug some of them when before leaving home. of course i can live with just 2 or 3 of them, or even without any of them. we used to live in a place where electrical power is not available so i kinda know how to survive it.

Wow-- great question- I have several lights on- the tv in the living room- but my daughter is out there- the microwave-- the fridge- the dishwasher- the computer always- 2 window fans and 1 a/c upstairs- It's 80 something up there and I'm trying to cool it down prior to bed- I'm sure we could do without alot of these things- and decrease our electric bill as well.

I probably have a lot of stuff on right now wasting electricity. I know the window AC in my bedroom is running because my toddler is asleep in the next room over and it's hot today. I'm pretty sure his TV and everything is off, though, but he might have got up and turned it back on after I left him in bed.
I have the dishwasher running right now, along with the clothes washer and the dryer. We also have the fridge and freezer both plugged in and running, along with our water cooler. Obviously my computer is on. I think my son's fan is on in his room. The microwave is plugged in, along with the other AC (it's not turned on, though). We have three other fans plugged in but not turned on. I think one of our other computers might be plugged in. We also have 4 phones plugged in, and three digital alarm clocks. Oh, and the four radios, five TV's, four DVD players, and three VCR's, along with the three gaming systems are all plugged in, even though none of them are being used right now. I really should go unplug a bunch of stuff!
It would be a real inconvenience if I had to cut back to just two or three energy using objects. Most of the work I do is online, so I need my computer. My fridge and chest freezer are both full of food, so they need to be left on. It's so hot out right now that I need to run the AC so we can be comfortable. And I would hate to have to wash my clothes by hand, so I need my washer, too. We could do without some of the other stuff, though, I guess. It's just more convenient to have a TV and radio in every room than to carry them around. lol

I have a lot of electrical appliances at home, most of them are computers, air conditioners, TV, CD/DVD player, fax machine, fridge, rice maker, oven, microwave oven, lights, fans etc. I think this month will especially get higher because we turn on the air conditioners for a long time because of the hot summer.

Most of the home appliances in my Home are Electrical only and almost all of them are running currently. I know there is a need to save the Electricity, but we are so dependant on them that we cant live without them.
If we are able to find some alternative source of energy, may be we can do something to save the Electricity also.

I don't think I could live without electricity, but anyway, I usually don't keep electric appliances on if I'm not using them... right now, we have the TV on, the fridge, the PC, the phone, and the microwave. And two lights (bi-pin halogen low consuming lights, not the regular lightbulbs). But we're using them!

I have the light above my head - night light in bathroom - refrige - air conditioner - alarm clock. I light over my head I could use a candle instead but it would be hard to type on Mylot. Night light in bathroom could be turned off but could not see in the dark. Refridge can't change that - air conditioner is only used in the day time while I am at home - Alarm clock is too hard to program every night before bed but I guess I could get one of those annouying tick tock drive you crazy travel alarms. But that is it nothing else. hugs

Don't even ask!! We have too many electrical devices to count so I'm not even going to try. We have several computers that we are working on right now. So between those computers and monitors that adds up. And of course we have one tv on right now. And who knows what it turned on in the living room right now with noone using it. I need to just start unplugging everything when I go to bed. You know even when something is plugged in but not turned on it still uses energy?

i've made a point of turning things off at the wall when not in use i find this actually cuts the power bill down alot. the kettle, coffe machine, washing machine they only need to be switched on when in use. lights i tend not to turn any on unless i'm in the room and switch off as i leave the room. if i didn't have children i think i would live by candle light but for saftey sake i tend not to use them until they are a little older

I see to that all appliances are switched off when not in use.

Wow...what a great post...and idea. It is rather frightening to frame things from your perspective...then apply it to our household. My goodness..along with a lot of what you cited we have four aquariums, ambient lighting, and a lot of air purifiers to try and maintain the air quality with two 70 pound dogs and five cats in the house.
We also have two computers, fans, digital clocks in most of the rooms in our 2,000 square foot house. Yssssh...I agree with you it may be time for us to take a long hard look at what we 'need' versus what we 'want' to keep running. Thanks for a consciousness raising discussion. Hope others 'get' the idea too!

I waste a lot of energy in my household due to a washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer, air conditioner, refridgerator, the television and this computer that i am posting this message on! There are probably more but i cannot think at the moment. I try to save electricity but i don't really think about it much and i leave electical appliances on all the time, who knows what my electricity bill is going to be like this month.
