Since my spouse cut back on his work schedule, we are actually making ends meet a lot easier. It's amazing, considering last year he worked seven days a week and we barely scraped by every month with enough to pay rent and feed ourselves. This was during the time when gas was almost four dollars a gallon. Literally, he had to work a second part time job to pay for gas to drive to his full time job. It was ridiculous. He spent on average $10 to $15 or more daily for gas and transportation.
But, now things are looking up for us. He quit his part time job, got a job with more flexible schedule that doesn't require him to drive 20 miles daily. So, now we are spending less than $10 weekly on gas! Who would have thought that you could actually have more spending money by working less.
Now we don't take the car out onto the road unless we absolutely have to do so. And, that is saving even more money.
That is my tip for saving money on gas. Please share you best tips.

Well, we used to spend $10 to $20 daily on gas and miscellaneous expenses. Now that number is less than $2.00 daily, most times, unless we take the car out. So our gas bill for the car never gets above $10.00. The money we save means extra time my spouse doesn't have to work. Last year he was working two jobs just to pay bills and gas for the car! Too much effort, too little return. The simpler life is paying off for us. Not a lot of extra money to go around, but he is here more often. That is more important for us than the ability to buy lots of extra junk!

My best tip if you have a job that you have to drive to do, is to drive slower than the speed limit, and take extra time to get there and back. Taking the extra time, can actually save you maney in the long run. No one really realizes this, because everyone is in such a dang hurry anymore. I look at it this way. HURRY UP AND WAIT. That is the way people live their lives these days.
I work a job, that part of it is to transport clients to and from dr. appointments and everywhere else they need to go.... YES it does get tiresome and you do feel like a taxi driver most of the time.
Anyway gas around here is now like 2.79 a gallon and fluctuates betwwen that and about 3.50. So I have learned to take my time and leave earlier and laugh at the people who yell and cuss at me while they are passing, and then sit through all of the same lights that I have to sit through, but they have to sit longer because they are in such a dang hurry to get up to that red light.
That is the funny part. I also like it when poeple pass me going like 20 over the limit and they catch all the cops in the area for everyone else.. I laugh at that one too.
Thank you for the interresting topic.

Hubby and I both teach at colleges in the downtown of our city. On 2 days per week we are able to commute together and leave one car at home. Granted, our schedule isn't exactly the same, but we make it work. On one of the days I finish before him and on the other he finishes before me, but we find things to do (I.e., grade papers) until the other is off work. The other three days there is no way we can commute together as I go to the hospital rather than downtown. We also live about 3 blocks from Blockbuster, so when we want a movie we walk to get it!

That is a very good tip! I would not have considered that driving slower would make such a difference. When we take our car out onto the road, i will remember that one. You are very smart to take your time and just take it easy. Those angry people are just setting themselves up for bad health! Be well.

i dont know driving and i cant give any tips from my personal experience!but i have read this somewhere that go under 60 and use cruise control .also dont use your ac !When you need to stop, don't use the brakes (except for emergencies, of course) but lift off the throttle and allow the car to slow down gradually. Any speed you have built up has cost you fuel, any use of the brakes is wasting it!

Several tips to save on gas:
1. service your car regularly. un-tuned car consumes more gas than a well maintained car.
2. change to car that uses natural gas, good for environment and good for our pocket.
3. buy a small car i.e. cheap on gas car for everyday use e.g. for go to work, buy groceries etc.
I am lucky as I can walk to my workplace. Good luck!

Since we moved to a city with good public transportation, we pretty much only drive to the grocery store and on trips when we have to go out of the range of the public transportation. So far, we haven't even used a full tank of gas this month, plus we don't have to worry about paying for parking.
My work gives me my bus pass for free, but we had to spend $600 for my fiance's. The good news, however, is that we will save far more than that by not driving as much!

Well it does make sense that the less you use the car, the less you are going have to pay for the gas. I do not spend any money on gas mainly because i do not have a car, i tend to walk or ride my bicycle everywhere i go. I am not sure what the gas prices around here are but they are probably still pretty high. Damn the government charging high taxes!
