Do you have an interview "outfit"?

Well, we've already established in one of my earlier discussions that most people hate interviews, but the sad fact is that it is still happening and it's a part of life and looking for jobs. So I'm sure all of you would have been to some interviews. So do you always wear different clothes, or do you have one special interview outfit, we're talking about first interviews here. Do you have a special outfit that you think looks professional, and you wear it over and over again to interviews? Or do you have a lucky outfit that you like to wear, but then if you have to wear it a lot, then it's hardly a lucky outfit, right?Well, I got my interview outfit, I don't really believe in the lucky part. But at least it looks good and professional. It's a pair of black pinstripe trousers, with a nice crisp, white shirt with black stripes along it. Recently I've added a grey and black waistcoat to that outfit, since they're really in, and it's too hot here to wear a jacket. 42 degrees today. Well, anyway, that's what I wore to an interview yesterday, and to an interview some weeks back. I did get a job then too, but it was too less pay and too much timings, this one seems better, if I get it. I hope I do, well, I'm expecting a call in 2 or 3 days, so wish me luck. And until then, tell me if you have an "interview outfit" of your own. If so, what is it like?

i guess i don't. i have a few suits that i wear for formal ocassions. glad that you've found something that works for you. if you got offered that job then i must mean that together with the right qualificiations, the suit must have worked as well. all the best for getting this new job. it's important to dress appropriately to give the right impression in a job.

yeah, well, the outfit does work, it's the other stuff that doesn't work out, I have a visa situation right now that makes it so hard to get a job. And I didn't get this one for the very same reason.

I do not know about interview today 2007 but certainly many years ago for a male it was very simple to use a suit with shirt and tie and shined polished shoes just about did it and of course what good is the classy clothes to make good impression ,look professional and look if you were not groomed and that is the way most went for interviews I attended several interviews for various reasons and I often successful.

Well, I guess it's still the same today for men. I think professional or work clothes don't change all that much for men or women.

I have never really had any type of interview outfit. I have just always done my best to look neat, clean and professional. The way I would dress would probably depend a lot on the type of job I was applying for though. Anyway, I wanted to wish you good luck on getting the new job that you applied for. I hope that you get it.

Well, thanks, I didn't get it, but it's definitely not because of the outfit, but because of a legality. Thanks for the best wishes, they'll come in handy on my next interview.

I am actually in the market for an interview outfit now. I'll probably go with a fitted suit and a cute camisole underneath. Any good recommendations for brands? I'm thinking Express, but maybe not since I want it to last.

Well, I'm not that picky about brands, I'm more of a bargain hunter, and mix and match type. I don't think that you have to spend a lot of money to buy something good. So my suggestion would be to "try, try, try" and see what's the best for your body and get the best deals.

Oh yes I do have an interview outfit but I think I need to buy a new one this year. The one I have is a black suit (with skirt) and everytime I feel really uncomfortable in it. Since it's a few years back when I bought it, I think I am going to get a new suit this year and I would opt for pants instead. I don't love being in skirt like that at all and I do think it would affect my performance if I don't feel at least comfortable in the outfit. I am planning on getting a black one with strips, I think that looks really professional.

Well, I'm not one for skirts either, I prefer pants myself.

I do have a interview outfit as it consists of a white button down long sleeve shirt, numerous solid ties, a black sports jacket, black dress pants, nice dress socks and dress shoes. You definitely want to dress nice and impress the interviews. "Dress to Impress" is what is commonly known. It does not matter what type of job as the employer will be impressed that you took the time to look nice. I have other shirts and pants that I could use as well. Having a nice dress belt for the pants is good too.

Sounds like you've got a whole wardrobe of interview outfits. Yeah, true you have to dress to impress in interviews as it's all about first impressions there.

Yes, I do have an outfit, and it is suited to the types of positions I apply for. It is a small black houndstooth check pants, vest the same with ribbon embroidery and trim, and contrasting pin stripe ribbon as well. I wear a colored blouse/button down shirt in one of the colors of the embroidery. Often turquoise, sometimes pink. I work in schools and nursing homes. This looks professional, yet cheery.

yeah,it's of great importance to look your best and impress your interviewer.I don't have a particular interview outfit because time changes, but I did try to look neat and clean, wearing white shirt along with a pair of grey or black pants or jeans. If in winter,a black jacket/suit on a white shirt helps you look professional. In addition, selecting a fitting tie is another contribution to the interview. And a professional hair style and polished shoes would be the impressive factor too.

yeah, Garden Gerty, you're absolutely right, you can look professional and cheery too, that's a nice outfit you described. And Lincoln, you really nailed the shoe part, I also think that shoes are an important part of every outfit, especially for the interview.

Even though I am not currently look for a job and haven't for 10 years, I do have my interview outfit in the closet, LOL. I have a special outfit that I change out so often to keep up with the times, that just in case something should come up like an interview, I will be ready for. I think it's important to look your best especially with first impressions, you know?

That's nice, so you have an outfit that's always "in", so tell me is that like the untouchable interview outfit or do you wear parts of it anyway?

A big portion of my job is to give interviews. So I have been on both sides of the issue (I've been the interviewer and the interviewee..). I think this is a great discussion because it stresses how important appearance is in the interview process. You would be surpised at how many people still don't really think about that. it's the easiest part of your interview, showing up and looking polished and professional. I know it's not fair to judge a book by it's cover, but unfortunately in the interview process that happens often. That said, my interview outfit is a black taliored pants suit. It's pretty classic so it's timeless and has lasted me a few years. I usually wear a white shirt with it and some small jewelry. Good luck Vega, I hope you get your call.

Yeah, of course a first impression is so important in an interview because that is also your last impression. Well, I know from sources that I'm not going to get the job, as there are some legal issues. But thanks for the good wishes, maybe they will come in handy for my next job interview.

Hi Vega~ good luck on your interview. I am not recently looking for a job, but year back I did have an interview outfit. It was a red skirt/jacket. I have always heard that red is a power color, so I would always wear this red outfit to interviews. Your outfit sounds very professional... I think that that is really all that matters. The interviewers are looking for people who are neat, clean, knowledgeable and professional.

Thanks for the good wishes. Unfortunately I didn't get the job due to some legal issues, anyway there'll be more opportunities, and my interview outfit will be working a lot now, ha ha. I like your suggestion about the red, and come to think of it, I don't have any red in my outfit.

Yes if ever you can go to a job that doesnt need an interview its very nice but its not happening that way. All jobs need an interview. Well if i will going for an interview usually i will wear a slacks and a blouse that is looks formal and clean. Some work offices likes to see you beautiful or attractive so you need to see to it that you are one of of them. The color of your outfit must be not too light and not too dark. Thats what i am thinking but i dont know really the exact way of clothing but formal clothes is enough for me.

Well, since I don't have a proper suit, I try to improvise, and plus it's so hot here, to wear a jacket anyway, so have to think of other ways to look professional.

If I went for a job once and didn't get it, I try not to wear that same outfit to another one. But I don't wear the same one to everything. I just usually wear what feels right for that day. Something nice...something that works...but something that I'm comfortable in and I feel normal in so I don't get all freaked out at the interview.

hmm.. a little superstitious there, perhaps? Well, I try to wear the same outfit, because my other "worky" clothes are way back in my cupboard, since I don't wear them that often, so I try to have a constant, that looks nice and is comfortable.

Well, yeah of course I like to match things up too. Agree with you on that one. I just keep a constant interview outfit, since I won't be going to the same place in that. Just get the maximum out of every outfit that way.

ha ha. obsessive compulsive, superstitious. hand in hand right :) I just don't feel right wearing the same thing. I don't even think I wear the same thing if I do get the job. I just like to mix it up. Sometimes even buying a new outfit.

I have one outfit that I like, for job interviews or business. It is a black skirt and a jacket to match. I like this outfit because I have a combination of different blouses I can wear with it. My favourites are: A gold one A pink one Various white ones A red one with a black leopard design on it.

LOl...Yes, I used to have a special suit that I would wear to interviews, it looked quite professional and expensive..It never worked though because I didnt have a piece of paper to say what I could ..I dont need it now, as I have given up looking.I would rather stay at home with the kids now..It was black slacks, and a black jacket, with a nice shirt underneath..

I don't have one particular interview outfit. Fortunately for me, I work in an office, therefore I have to have business clothes to wear each day of the week. I do have one outfit that stands out more than others, and looks more professional, so if I were to go to an interview I would probably wear that. Good luck and I hope everything went well with the interview!

Well good luck with getting that job. I don't have any one outfit that I like to wear usually I do not get dressed up to go to interviews I wear something casual and relaxed I honestly believe that it helps me to remain relaxed and more myself in an interview, because as you said they are all something we do not like and usually puts us on edge about common sense questions that we are not sure if we are answering right or not lol
