I have always wanted to visit India but never have had the chance. In the United States everyone has to pass a driving test to obtain a license, and even prior to getting a license you are issues a permit for I think 6 months. The police will pull you over if they catch you speeding and charge you lots of money for breaking the speed limit. There are many driving laws in the U.S.
So if I ever do go to India, what is the best way for me to get around? Any advise?

Yes, i totally agree with you, the traffic has become and is still becoming bad to worse. The smaller cities specially with their by lanes and people with no traffic rules and sense on them is like...And with time the population boom has also added to the trouble. So is the case with the metros, where the traffic is so much that it takes a couple of hours to commute from one place to another. And to top it all are the roads, whihc are in a very bad state, more so now a days with the rains ! So it all add up !

Gosh - I've never driven in India, whenever I go there on holiday (usually once a year) I feel quite traumatised for the first week or so by the way people drive out there LOL! When I arrive at the airport; relatives come to collect us with a hired car and driver and for the whole 1 hour journey home I have to keep my eyes covered rather than scream at the driver every few seconds "watch out for that car/bus/bicycle/pedestrian"! You are literally taking your life in your hands driving out there and honestly, when I come back to the UK I avoid driving for a few days because I'm scared I'll end up beeping my horn at everyone every minute or ignoring a policeman directing traffic which you really can't get away with doing over here LOL!
