I'm in the weeds

I have spent hours pulling weeds in my garden and they have still taken over. I think where I went wrong is that I tilled straw into my garden. I will never do that again. I do not want to use chemicals in my garden. How do you keep the weeds down in your garden? I plan on tilling it all up in the fall and my Dad thought I should cover it with a tarp to kill everything off in the late fall/winter

I use this roll of weed killer. It's a plastic or some is a cloth that you put down and cover with mulch that will prevent the weeds from growing up through it. You can find this stuff at any Hardware or Wal-Mart in the garden section. I love this stuff and since I started using it I have no problems with weeds at all.

No problem, btw depending on which brand you get, some have up to a 5 year guarantee on them.

You will have to pull the weeds. Or put a tarp over it now. Covering it in the winter will not do anything if you live anywhere it gets cold.
You need the heat to kill the seeds. So cover it now or in the spring. I am not a big fan of covering the ground for a long time. The soil will be robbed of water and will not be as good as it would have been if left uncovered.
You will also kill beneficial bacteria which break down soil particles and create fertilizer. The worms which aerate and fertilize the soil will also leave.
You will have weeds for 3 years or more from the seeds in the soil. The amount of weeds you get will decrease. Seeds don't always germinate their 1st year. It is how they survive if a generation fails to produce.
Do you have an area you can devote to a compost pile? Save fruit, vegetable, tree and plant scraps for your own soil amendments and fertilizer. It takes a couple years to really get the organic stuff going.
You can also till in some leaves. It will help you get rid of some this fall.

Using a hoe also works but you have to pay them well to get to perform manual labor. LOL
It is a useful tool if you can work it. It will save your back. You can walk in your garden and cull the weeds as you go.

I use what the poster above said. But it's not a weed killer, it just keeps weeds from growing. It's a mesh tarp, mine was cloth, that allows water to go through. But it's black to keep out the sunlight. I laid it down in all my gardens and then put mulch on top, like the poster said. Now about once a week or every other week, I just walk around my garden and pull out one or two tiny weeds. That's it. In fact, i often wish there were more weeds so I had more to do in my garden (but don't tell anyone that!)

My garden is mostly plants and flowers. And I've only owned the house for a little less then two years, so I haven't tilled it again. Sorry, but I don't really have an answer for that. But it's very easy to pull up since it's like putting down a blanket.

I think I will have to try something like that. Now I have a question if you dont mind. Do you pull it up when you till up your garden?

I have the same problem. I went as far as trying to get the root out, and bought the black-weed-blanket to cover it, still they grow through it. I have heard of using vinegar to kill it, and boiled water to get to the root, but I haven't done it yet. I also don't want to use chemical in my yard because I have small children playing. Your dad gave a very good advice.
