What do you think of swimming lessons?

I just signed my 8 year old boy up for swimming lessons because he is afraid of putting his face in the water. My neighbor said it's a waste of money, and I should just let him go into the pool and learns on his own. My boy had a few indicident of getting dunked before, so his fear of water was good enough for my decision to sign him up. Did I make a right choice? Will he be less frightened of going into the water?
