Freedom? since when we have freedom? Since when we have a liberal instructor or priest who understand us more than what they say?
Freedom and religion nowadays does not, per se go together. In the first place, there are no concrete evidence of a potential historic find that religion has set us free. Religion is like believing on a previous state of events or instance that happend, either be a magical or a mystical one. Im a Christian, I believe in a TRIUNE GOD and religion are just set of authority that never gives us freedom.
Religion is like a house in one roof, whenever you are in the outside, you'll get wet.

We need freedom of religion because only a free decision for God can be a transforming experience. Pondering about your question gives me a hint why so many people are religious but not at all different from the rest, and I say this with respect to Christianity, more than to any other religious belief.
Only true conversion (spontaneous repentence and belief in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior) can produce the transformation of man according to the model of God. Joining Church because we belong to a Christian family, because they taught us to believe, because it's our nation's belief, because it's tradition...and like motives, can do more harm than good. We need freedom (and information, and learning) to make a valid decision.
