Why do people really deny God?

This is a question I would love to know everyone's views about.
Do people deny God, b\c they know God holds you accountable for your actions, and they choose not to take responsibility for their own misjudgments? Do they deny him out of fear? Could it really be b/c of science and logic. Or is it just not caring one way or another.
What do you all think?
I have been in a discussion with a brilliant young guy who claims to once be a believer and then apparently one day he looked at religon from the scientific standpoint. He is now an athiest and believes he can disprove the existance of God or any other Holy being that one might believe in.
How can a person be a believer, have faith and then suddenly decides not to. What happened?
This is a discussion to talk about personal viewpoints. No one is right or wrong. Just points of view.

I am an Atheist and don't beleive in God, I don't beleive in a heaven or hell so I only hold myself accountable for my own actions and I try to live my life as a good person not because I am afraid of god or the afterlife but because it is the right thing to do. I don't think this is a dress rehersal and beleive it is the only life I have so I try to live it to the fullest for the day. I never had faith in a supreme being so I never woke up and decided not to be a beleiver because I never was to begin with. I think humans should all just respect each other and try to get along no matter what we beleive in or don't beleive in as the case may be.

For many years when asked 'what my religion was' or 'what I believed in' I told people I was atheist or agnostic. It was not for another 10 years or so that I had some very primal experiences and began to challenge my way of thinking.
In retrospect, the reason I told people I did not believe in a 'god', was because I had had not firsthand personal experiences that would lead me to see even the possibility of such a thing. It had always been suggested to me that god was formed like a human, with human action and human emotions. It was not until I began to experience, that I ever even dreamed of a force, a flow, that too is alive within all things. Today, when people speak of god, I can understand what they mean if I remember to think of "Him" without regard to gender, to form, to species, to race, and to feelings and judgement. So now, today, I say yes, I believe in god, whereas before perhaps I would say no...but through both of those times It has always been the same thing.

Perhaps that persons "faith" was solely based on what his parents taught him and not out of any true feelings that the god they believe in existed.
Just because a person doesn't believe in the same god you do doesn't mean that they don't believe in something. It sounds like this guy believes in science. Let him have his beliefs. Keep yours if that's what you wish. There's a reason that there are so many different religions in the world.

To me, faith is a personal choice. If believing in the christian god doesn't make you want to be a better person and do right by your faith, then you need to find a faith that suits you better.
As long as it makes a person want to be a better person and as long as it somehow uplifts a person through their tough times... they can worship their toaster for all I care.

For me I feel I just thought about it and decided there was no logical explaination for there being a god. I've grown to dislike organized religion because they all feel they are right and they can't all be right.

Yeah, I understand what you mean, and one HUGE mistake many people in "organized religon" makes is, they seem to think they are perfect. They judge, they condemn, they refuse to understands an individuals viewpoint b/c they KNOW they are right.
These types of people are even misinformed of their OWN religon b/c they were TOLD it was that way and they never learned it on their own.
There is nothing wrong with arguing and defending your belief, but geez, know what you are talking about first. That is why I created this discussion. I know why I believe in God, but before I get in too many more heated debates with people. I want to know why they don't, so I can understand both sides.
Pretty much the way I look at life is, I am Christian, I cannot judge others, according to God b/c being a human we ALL sin, and the bible does say HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN, CAST THE FIRST STONE. I try to live by that.
Do what you want, believe what you want. If something in another persons life is wrong or sinful, according to MY belief then its their problem, not mine. As long as it does not affect me or my family, I do not try ot get involved. I have enough problems of my own, why worry about others wrongdoing?

I've known people who lost faith for a number of reasons. My father used to be a minister and evangelist (before I was born) and wound up leaving it behind because he was gay, and couldn't accept that God would condemn him for being gay. For a while he claimed to believe in God without all the religious trappings involved, but over time it seemed his faith just left him. Now if you ask him he'll say he doesn't believe in anything, and lives his life the way he feels he should live it to be happy, and let others be happy as well.
I've often had people accuse me of denying God because I don't believe in the same God they do, but I have strong beliefs in Gods, just not the same one. I cannot imagine losing faith as my father did, because I have a close personal relationship with my Gods, particularly my primary Goddess.

There are so,so,so many things which show the presence of God, I can't understand how a non-believer can explain his point of views, there come such situaitons in life that even a non-believer starts having faith in him, I am a strong, strong believer and can feel his presence in everything.

Such type of discussions are endless as no one is there to judge the points we will put. If we are not even capable to know our self how can we talk about the God. I feel that before going into such discussion better we discuss Nature (our body, mind, actions, conscious etc.) and our self (soul)-vital source of energy. It is rediculous that people do not know what they are and they start to challenge the existence of GOD or any omnipower. If somebody is atheist or theist let him enjoywith his thought.

Hi,
Well, it could be narcissism and the fact that yes, if they are held accountable and the Holy Spirit speaks to their heart, they will have to amend their ways.
Has this person you talk with ever heard of Lee Strobel? He and his wife were athists, then Lee, being a reporter of some sorts, decided to research this Jesus and he in turn came to know this Jesus and denied his athesim thinking. Or something like that. Lee Strobel was a scientific thinking man too, but he used his knowledge to gain a new perspective of Jesus and God and the truth that he seeked.
But, many people who grew up in the church as children and them as adults do change their way of thinking about Jesus as a God of love and mercy and compassion. Especially if they have been wronged or feel they are not worthy of his love.
Just pray this man's heart will be turned towards his first love again.

I dont know about another people but so far we chinese people always believe in God and Goddesses. We always do praying every day and for every ceremony. But I have some friends too that dont believe in god too and dont have religions. There are some people who once believed in Him and turned out not again. It could be coz they thought that when they were having problems, God never been there for them. Thats why they started to believe that there never a God around us.
