They were sued by the World Wildlife Fund to change their name, and lost.
Personallly, I think that World Wildlife Fund should have allowed them to keep the WWF name with a caveat that they had to make a sizeable donation annually (say... $2 Million). That would have been a win-win situation for them. It's not like people are going to confuse the two, you know?

what wicannia said is true!
and what she suggested is also a great idea! Silly people only thought of themselves and not the animals that they are supposed to support.

Tom add to the above, before becoming the WWF it was the WWWF(world wide wrestling federation) and other than the name being too long,I never did find why they changed it.I guess it was probably a tax reason(you know,Vince senior being taken over by Vince junior).

Well,, every1 liked 2 see WWF bt when it made its comeback,, dey had 2 change da name to WWE b'coz of da strong opposition by da official WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature). According 2 dem,, WWF ws an organisation 2 save da lives while on da oder end WWE(den WWF) ws made 2 destroy lives,, nt completely bt still almost completely.. So,, dey demanded 2 change da name,, thus it ws changed 2 WWE....

Well, I think you have your answer on this one.
But I'd also like to have my two cents on this. I think in a way it's good. I remember there was a phase in WWF when everyone did not know that the whole win-lose thing was orchestrated. And when they found out that it was supposedly "fake", it really disappointed a lot of people.
Changing the "F" to "E" as in entertainment, also makes it sounds a little bit more honest, since it's a sports entertainment show, and not really claiming to be all that "real", so I guess in a way it worked out well for them.
Plus that logo looks so much better now, that they dropped the F.

As the first member stated it was due to the fact that World Wildlife Foundation had the name more many years before the WWF was around name wise. They never used the initails but felt that it confused many people thet type wwf into the box for search and sites. That's all I know.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~
