So what would you recommend as the basic softwares needed for a PC or say your PC. Just to be safe and run your computer smoothly in perfect manner without any trouble and keeping in mind activities of a normal user, which softwares would be your choice and what you recommend? I would say some softwares like MS Office, AVG antivirus, Anti-spyware, personal firewall, Winrar or Winzip, Download managers, flash player, adobe reader, what else comes to your mind?

don't forget Firefox Mozilla browser and put some add-ons in it. iTunes player works great for podcast subscription. McAfee or Norton Antivirus are essential softwares too.

How could i forget that, i have been using Mozilla Firefox for so long but of late i've been trying out Internet Explorer 7 so it just slipped of my mind. Mcafee and Norton are good too along with Kaspersky and avast but AVG is free and there are no big limitations in the free version thats why i prefer it.

Actually, you can get McAfee for free. AOL gives you its antivirus, antispyware, firewall, IDS, script blocking, and even IP tracing for free! This is a killer deal; McAfee is the only vendor with ICSA certification in all three categories of traditional endpoint security: antivirus, antispyware, and PC firewall. McAfee's script blocking takes care of these iFrames that are running rampant on the Web right now, and McAfee's IP tracer is supposed the be the best around to pinpoint a hacker who tries to probe you. Get it here: http://safety.aol.com/isc/index.adp?

Thanx for the link buddy. AOL is doing a great job by providing Mcafee internet security for free which otherwise is available for a set price. I know Mcafee internet security is the top most program along with Norton for Internet security so its really good when you can download it free of cost.

Install Adobe Acrobat, Shockwave, Flash players 5. Install WinRar it opens zip are rar both type of files. 7. Install MS Office Genuine. For cheap and free versions Office suits Abi-Word, Open Office, Avir/Avast/AVG anti Virus, Firewall your Windows and keep off updates. FDM is best free download manager free with no adwares never install peer to peer softwares, Keep Adaware SE, and Use Fire Fox or Opera as Browser. do this after clean install of OS. Always run anti virus thrice a week. ** Please keep all the update off if you are using second hand copy of licensed softwares.

I've got all those softwares installed on my PC. I'm running genuine softwares so easy to update for me. Norton internet security is not free so Mcafee would be better as the person mentioned in this post that Mcafee internet security is being given free by AOL. FDM is surely one of the best download managers. Its good when you wanna surf the internet and download a lot at the same time as it doesn't leech away all the bandwidth so you can do downloading and surfing at the same time without any backdrop in surfing speed. If you want to make full use of the bandwidth for your downloads, go for Internet download manager as it speeds your downloads but slows down your surfing speed somewhat. There's another download manager that Santuccie mentioned in this post saying it can speed downloads upto 800%, i'll try that too.

i think these softwares are sufficient for the smooth running of a pc. just add classic media player in the list for playing music and movies. and i'd like to suggest that if u r constantly connected with internet use NOD32 as ur antivirus. i've tested many antiviruses and i think that it is the best.

Classic media player, whats special in this one. I'm using Windows media player 11. So you recommend NOD32 antivirus, the person above your post recommended mcafee or norton internet security suites. Is NOD32 free or not, you are using free version or full version, I would like to try it so do reply about it.

It really depends on the user. Everyone should know how to defragment the hard drive. Although newer drives aren't as profoundly impacted as older drives, anyone who defrags for the very first time after a year of use would still notice a distinct change. Even better is an offline defrag, which can help to stabilize the system. I recommend PerfectDisk, as it's the only product whose offline defrag I've never experienced problems with (knock on wood). Almost everyone needs a productivity suite. I happen to have training in clerical office, and use certain features that only MS Office has. For average users, though, OpenOffice should be sufficient. I have WinRAR, but could just as easily recommend 7-Zip. It can't create a RAR archive, but it can open one. I haven't used a download manager since I moved to Lodi, as Comcast's download speeds are plenty for me. But a download manager is never a bad thing to have, especially in the event of connection breakage. The one I liked the best was MetaProducts Download Express. I'd recommend Foxit Reader over Adobe. It's lighter, it's less of a target for exploits, and it doesn't have to be updated every week! I can't stand Adobe Reader. UGH!!! Flash Player, yes, yes. For security, my recommendation is McAfee SecurityCenter special edition from AOL. It's the only all-in-one suite I've found for free, and extremely powerful. It has antivirus, antispyware, firewall, IDS, IP tracing, and script blocking. Script blocking takes care of those pesky iFrames that are running around now. Sign up for a free e-mail account with AOL, and McAfee SecurityCenter is all yours: http://safety.aol.com/isc/index.adp? If you don't clean up after yourself occasionally, cookies can slow you down a bit. Free Internet Eraser is a good thing to have. In addition, temporary Windows files can present their own problems. CCleaner is good to have, though one should take a look at its settings before using it. One thing I'd especially recommend turning off is the registry cleaner. CCleaner is not a specialized registry cleaner, and could cause serious problems. One last thing that comes to mind is burning ROM. If you have a burner, and you didn't get Nero or something else with it, you should have something. Nero is the only one I like, but there are plenty others, and even some freebies that may be appealing to certain users. You can find a handful of these at Gizmo's site: http://www.techsupportalert.com/more/extended.htm#86 Hope this helps!

Defragmentation is a basic utility, anyone using a computer should know it. I haven't used 7-zip but Winrar is better as it can create rar files too unlike 7-zip. Internet Download manager is the best i've ever used, it is said to speed up downloads upto 500% and it makes use of the whole bandwidth available giving you really fast downloads. Adobe is surely getting heavier with new versions. Foxit reader may be lighter but i'm not sure if it can read all adobe reader specific files. But yeah adobe reader is very heavy. Security suite - from now on Mcafee Internet security suite, thats what i'll be using after i download from AOL link. Safety and clean up tools are good to have but i don't use such softwares as i clean up these temporary files and all th junk from the PC manually myself rather than have softwares doing it and eating system resources.

I agree that anyone should know how to defrag. But you might be amazed at the difference a good offline defrag would make. Your computer will love you for it! :D You're right about WinRAR. I have it installed on my machine, but anyone who wants a freebie and doesn't want to bootleg could find a viable alternative in 7z. MetaProducts Download Express speeds up downloads by a factor of 8, as in 800%. It achieves this by utilizing multiple ports, which I imagine other products do as well. But back when GetRight was the only thing you heard about, I did see Download Express top it. You're probably right about Adobe vs. Foxit, but I haven't had any problems with it yet (knock on wood). And as far as the cleaning of temp files goes, you've got the right idea. Actually, Windows Disk Cleanup is about as good as any. McAfee's greeeeeat. Using this, you don't need anything else. Except SiteAdvisor; I forgot to mention that one. :P

Firefox is regarded as better than Internet explorer just for the reason that Internet explorer is the most used browser and therefore the most hacked as well. Hackers set out to find leaks in Internet Explorer as soon as the new version is released, so thats why everyone recommends firefox and its got loads of add-ons and plugins too. So yeah Firefox is my favourite too. NOD323 seems to be a favourite of many, i haven't tried it yet but many have recommended it to me. I have read its reviews by some top sites and magazines and they have been quite good.

I will tell you the things require & recommend for smoth working of your PC. 1st your need to choose appropriate operating system, I would suggest Windows XP & Windows2000 is the best OS ever. Then 2nd important this is to keep in mind is Virus protection, I would say use Norton Antivirus or McAfee Antivirus. Install Internet security, its taking care of virus, spywares, adwares, hackers, malwares etc. Now about softwares, you can install Ms-Office, & some basic operating softwares which you are using. Dont go for AVG Antivirs , its already leak once my pc was hacked using AVG antivirus. dont use AVG Antivirus, go to Norton or McAfee Antivirus or internet security suits. Then install some browsers which is quck loading websites like Opera, Slim browsers etc. Flash player comes with IE but you have to install is seperately. I hope this will help you.
