Hi there, does anyone know how to get rid of algae?Ive tried everything from cleaning my tank with bleach(where I have been told is not very safe) to protecting it from sunlight. My aquarium is position just inside the porch. I thought protecting it from sunlight will kill the problem but that doesnt work either. Is there a chemical that I can use? I love my gold fishes to bits..And I just hate to see them suffocate in there!

You can try buying some bottom feeders that feed on algae. They usually do a good job cleaning up.

Well I would get some Pleccos and corrys. They are both bottom feeders. The Plecco will eat the algae and the corrys will eat all the excess food and junk on the bottom. Bleach is ok to use to clean your tank. Use HOT water and bleach, clean and rince well with HOT water. Then add water and Declorinator. The declor will take out the clorine in the tank. Do this a time or two to make sure everything is out. Also you can use a scrub pad to clean the inside of the tank. Wipe down the sides once or twice a week. I wouldnt use liquid algae remover because It might harm the fish. Hope this Helps!!

Your very welcome! Plecos are an algae eater. Technical name is Plecostomus. Here is a pic of one.

i'm not sure i'd advise anyone to use bleach....if i have to sterilise my tank when i do an overhaul.....move fish out etc....i use cooking salt.
to get the algae off i use a sponge scourer(the ones you get for dishes)use a new one though and keep it just for the tank.do you have a filter in the tank?if not it is a very good investment.i also have oxygenating plants(elodea)and 2 hong kong plecos.....they are ok to put in cold water.if you do a partial water change weekly and just give the glass a wee scrub...i do the front and sides and leave the back and the ornaments for the plecs.
and good luck.
