Are you a fan of air conditioning?

ac - air conditioner

I'm not. Sure it's nice to walk into an air conditioned room when it's sweltering hot outside, but as I was saying in another post, it's bad for climate change. Every night at my work when I go into the office, I find that the air conditioner has been left on for hours with no one in there. If I don't turn it off, that means the air conditioner would stay on 24 hours a day. I wonder how often this is happening elsewhere? In the same office, last night I went to turn the AC off and found that they had left the radion on as well. I think air conditioning is mostly unnecessary and shouldn't be used in private homes unless usage is monitored and reduced to as small n amount as possible.. What do you think?

I love AC. I can't stand to be so hot that my arms are sticking to my desk or I'm sweating because I'm just sitting still. It's so gross. I think it's sorta ridiculous that you say it shouldn't be used. Really it IS necessary. if you have animals and you don't use AC and it's 90 something...100 something degrees outside...your animals could get heat stroke. Heck YOU can get heat stroke. I know I can't sleep at all when I'm hot...therefor it's necessary to use it when Sleeping. I can't stand being hot! Therefor it's necessary. It's ridiculous to be sweating in your home! I have energy saver features on my AC at home. So you set it on a specific temp. I hardly go lower than 75 degrees. The AC comes on when it feels like it's getting warm...stays on to cool it off and then turns off again... until it feels the temperature is going up again. That's all you need. So it's not on constantly.

You brought up good points that I forgot about! Pets, elderly, and the sweating. I hate sweating too. I hate being hot because there is only so much you have to take off. I'd rather be cold...you can add layer after layer if needed :)

Me too. Sweating and being hot is the worst. I'd much rather be cold... because you can do something about it. you can never really cool down from being hot.

I honestly don't think I could live without my air conditioning. I can't sleep when I'm hot. I use our air conditioning where it is going non-stop however I don't have it set really low (where it's freezing in here). Just low enough that I can sleep comfortably. Our bedroom is over our basement/cellar so it gets humid in there so I have to have our air turned down a little lower than I would otherwise. I would just turn it up at night but it's cheaper to have your unit set at one thing instead of changing it several times a day. This way it only has to maintain temperature whereas it would have to run more/harder to get it at the temp you need it. A lot of businesses to turn down the air conditioning when they close or in the middle of the night (in cases they're open 24 hours) but don't turn it completely off. Personally though I hate walking into any place where it is freezing. And a lot of places are like that. They don't take into consideration you're wearing shorts and short sleeves so they don't have to keep at a refrigerator temperature. LOL

I can't sleep if it is too hot either. I use water cooler for sleeping, but where I came from up north, we needed to use airconditioning all night to keep cool enough.

i think you are right by saying that air-con is not a necessity in private homes.Fab will be just fine to cold our body and it's cheap too. However i'm not a fan of air-con because it often get too cold and it freeze my brain (as in i can't think properly ) haha..i prefer cold breeze blowing to my body .

I am more of an air conditioning person, but I agree that we shouldn't waste our resources (i.e. energy) if we are not using the apparatus. I think it is only when we have nothing left that we will realize how wasteful we were as a society.

I know I'm the exception but I don't care for air conditioning. I mean, don't get me wrong...It's definately a nice luxury. I'm out here in Korea and it's hot and extremely humid. But, every cab or building you walk into is freezing. It doesn't help that as soon as you walk outside you start to sweat, so when you get back indoors your cold and wet. But, I have also found that I'm usually colder than others, I suppose I need more iron in my blood. I just wish that people could turn the AC down just a little bit.

i strongly agree with you and i think the most important thing is that too much staying in the airconditioner room will cause you bad body

I thionk air conditioning is nice to have in your home and your workplace but I do agree that it should be used in moderation. There is no need to leave it on a very high temperature if no one is going to be there to benefit from it.

Coincidentally I have the aircon on in my room right now, lol. I honestly think we should use the aircon when necessary. It's just a waste of electricity to keep it on overnight at the office, but I think many offices do that because the PCs are on and they have to be kept cool.

I know I like to have it. I just wish I could afford to set it lower. I've been tired most of the Summer because of not sleeping well because of the heat.

I prefer the fan because I feel that the air con is too dry. No matter where I am, I really prefer the fan although many people told me that the fan is not good because it might give me troubles when I'm older. However, I think the air con is worse. Anyway, I guess its a personal preference.

I am a happy user of air conditioning in my home! My brother actually sell's Air Condition's and he got me one that saves alot of power. The reason why companies leave the air condition running on is because it keeps the room cool and more energy(power) is saved actually by keeping it on. How? The Ac is set to keep the room temperature at a certain number. When you keep the Ac running it reaches that temperature and then stops but runs again if temperature increases meaning it won't actually run much after it reaches the certain temperature you set it too. When you turn the Ac off it uses more power(energy) to reach that temperature again once it is turned on. I hope you understand what I mean and change your views about AC.

I prefer fresh air myself. Alot of building that have air conditioners are unhealthy because there is no fresh air just recirculated air. Also the duct work is not always maintained properly along with what you said. A waste of electricity most of the time.

I see what your saying but I love walking into an air conditioned room esp. when it's too hot. Sure it can be quiet breezy when it's cold but without it people would be sweating away. The air conditioner maybe shouldn't be left on if no one's in the room but at least it keeps the room cool. When I was at college there was a room that had no air con and it got really unbearable being in their for 2 hours eventually we did move to an air condition room but think about it, without it it's like trapping a dog in a car in the middle of summer.

Yes, I am a big fan of air conditioning. This is because I come from a very hot climate. I was born & brought up in Port Augusta. It gets to 40 to 45 degrees there in summer (celcuis). Although I live in Adelaide now, it can still get very hot here. We have a refrigerated aircondioner, plus a water cooler & an fan. We really try to limit the air condioners use, as they do use a lot of electricity. Sometimes in summer, if our powrer stations can't keep up with demand, the government askes everyuone to turnm offtheir aircondioners for 15 minutes every hour.

AC is my best friend down here in Georgia. I previously lived in Scotland and Canada and never experienced the kind of heat and humidity that we get here. I recently visited my sister in Canada and thought I was going to die in bed at night without any AC.

I agree that running AC uses up energy that might ne unneccesary. However, turning it off and turning it on again is actually LESS EFFICIENT than leaving it on. How hard it has to work, and the energy it pulls trying to RECOOL a room is much worse than leaving it on. If it is temperature controlled, then it only comes on when it has to. but if you turn it OFF and let the space warm up over time, it has to work overtime to recool the space that it cooled the day before. Where I work, AC IS A REQUIREMENT! First, any office that runs a large number of computers and a server NEEDS AC. AC not only regulates temperature, but it also reduces moisture. The life of your computer server will be greatly shortened without being in a temperature controlled room. We also work with electronics and computer components, where ESD and temperature are a major concern during assembly. So in my office, AC is a requirement to ensure proper handling and assembly of our products.
