My daughter just called 911 yesterday but there wans't any emergency. In the past 6 months we taught her about 911 and what it is suppost to be used for, but I noticed in the last month or so she had been asking about what happends once you call and I tried to explain YOU ONLY CALL IF THERES REALLY AN EMERGENCY! But all my talking didn't cure her curiosity I guess. So I was just wondering how many other people if any have had a child call 911.

My three year old did that once. His 15 year old sister was watching him while i was in the shower. the police actually came to the house and insisted on looking in the house to make sure everything was fine and my kids were not being held hostage or etc. kinda funny, but unfortunately i got a lecture from the policeman!

I called once but it was not totally bad, i saw i very very big tourtle on the road and it is really rare lookig and odd, i have never seen that and it was going to die if it was on the road for long, i asked many people how could i remove it or do something for it...it was not very innicent looking...so finally i called 9-1-1 and asked the to do something for it. They came and rescued it but told me that for animal-help call 411 next time

my son is only 1 year and 5 months i think he is still young to do such things. if ever the time comes and he will do that then i will definitely explain to him that you call 911 only for emergencies or if something strange is happening.
but then on the other side i think the people at 911 would really understand that.

My daughter called when she was 13 just to see what would happen. Then she called them back to tell them that she was just curious! The police were knocking on our door in no time flat!! Lucky for me they did not press charges!
Also did you know that if you press the reciever on your phone repeatedly, that 911 automatically responds? We learned this when my girls were teens and fighting over the computer. We had dial up back then and one of them thought she would disconnect her sister by taking the phone off the hook. When it didn't immediatly disconnect, she began pushing the reciever. Once again..cops at my door for a false 911 call.

I don't have any kids but I do have a cousin who did call 911 when their wasn't an emergency. It was actually more funny of a situation then a serious moment. Here's what happend: He picked up the phone called 911 heard the lady's voice and then hanged up. The cop's took a while before they reached and when they did my aunt told my cousin to explain himself to the cop's why he called them. As a small 6 year old this is what he said: I just called because I wanted to see if you guy's would actually come if I needed you, you guy's took so long... what if this was a real emergency. LOL bright kid. The laughed and then told him it was only for emergency's and that because he could have just taken someone's life right now by wasteing the cop's time for no reason. My cousin understood the cop and has not called for a non-emergency again. Don't worry it won't happen again it's just a one time thing.

Yes I do agree that not wanting to teach your child their name , phone number and adress is a really DUMB thing my daughter is 5 and can tell you her adress phone number as well as my first and last name (my last name is different from hers) I figure that she should know my last name too incase we ever got seperated in a stopre they could page my name =) and she knew that 911 was only for emergency because she came to me and said mommy the cops are on our street and "i know there coming to our door" before I had time to ask her how or why she "knew" they were coming they were already at the door! LOL it was in 2 minutes or less from the time she hung up and the first cop showed up. They explained to her about only calling if we needed help and that you should not hang up on the operator even if you cant talk keep dont hang it up!I think she was sscared that she was gonna get into trouble but she now knows that they come and as she said "mommy they came so fast i couldnt tell you what i did!"

My kiddios have all called 911 at the age of 6. The baby that is 6 years old did this and the cops came over to the house and he the 6 year old went to a friends house. It took the cops to come to the house 10 minites and then the cop wanted to check the inside of the house and did a thuro walk around thou the house. This is funny becuse we have meath heads that live across the road and when I called the cops on them for selling to someone in my driveway it took them 2 hours and 30 minutes to come out here to my house and by then they had left the area.

I think it is only natural for a child to experiment with the 911 calling feature after they have learned its use. That doesn't mean that all children do it. My youngest has never done it but my eldest did when she was young. The operator called me back to see if there was a real emergency. I apologized and told her I would have a talk with my daughter. It is good for them to know how to use it. They should also know their own home number and address. Our neighbour's son (5) does not know his own home phone number and when he asked his mother what it was she wouldn't tell him. That's stupid to me. What if he got lost? They need to know what to do in case of an emergency. What if it was you lying at the bottom of the stairs unconscious? You definitely need your children to know this calling feature. And they will experiment - once. But you are correct in explaining that it is only to be used in case of an emergency. You should also give examples of different types of emergencies so that they know.

Well I never actually dialed 911, but once I tried doing an "emergency call" on my deactivated cell phone and it went through as soon enough, I heard someone on the line. I freaked out and hung up right away. Does this make me guilty??

Well my twins were 5 years old at the time and learning about 911 in school. They used to talk about dialing 911 all the time. I told them not unless it is an emergency then you can dial 911. One day while in the kitchen cooking, my twins had sneaked the phone in the back and dial 911 unbeknowing to me, instead of talking to the operator they giggled and hung up on her, she traced the call and sent law enforcements to our home. The doorbell ranged and I answered and there were two policemen standing there. Is there a problem one quickly asked? No, I said, what brings you to my residence? There was a dropped 911 call from this address, the officer responded. No, I said just me and my kids and I'm cooking dinner, there couldn't have been a call. Yes, said the officer looking suspiciously over my shoulder. I invited them in and called to my kids. I asked them did one of them accidently call the 911 number, my two oldest responded no, but the moment I looked those twins in the eye I knew they had called. I said twins did you call the 911 # they admitted they did shyly in front of the police. They told me they was interested in what the teacher said about calling for emergencies. The police asked them did they have an emergency? One of the twins said, I just wanted to see if you really would come if I was in trouble. We all laughed and he told her the importance of calling when the situation arises and then they left.
