I often get scared and wake up late nights. This is a symptom you get when you see bad dreams. I do get scared a lot of bad dreams. I drink some water ,walk about for sometime, take deap breaths and then offer my short prayer to the almighty and then sleep well.

I try to change my thoughts to something else, so when I go back to sleep, I will dream pleasant dreams. I also snuggle close to my husband. I figure these are the devil trying to scare me, and since I do not like him, the dreams are like scary stories. When I was a little girl, I had a nightmare but then I faced the monster and it went away. Usually I remember my dreams though so it is easier to deal with them than if you have no idea what you are afraid of. Then when I am in the nightmare, I say 'Wake up!! Wake Up!! Wake up!!! very loudly, and scream. Usually that does it, and I am awake.

It depends on what type of bad dream it is. If it's one of the ones that comes from my own experiences, I usually shower or bathe right away, and then I can go back to bed because I feel clean, like I have washed it away.
If it's more of a horror-movie-type bad dream, then I'll go do something I enjoy for a while, like read or come online. Then once the image is out of my head I can go back to bed.
If it's one of those "bad things happening to people you care about" nightmares, those are harder to deal with. Those usually require a cleansing ritual in the bedroom for me (something akin to you saying a prayer before going back to sleep).
