Vista comes in a lot of different flavors.
Home Basic
Home Premium
Business
Ultimate
For the home basic there is no real difference from Windows XP home other than the fact that it takes up a lot more recources in your computer.
Vista Premium adds AERO which is a cool new graphical system they added (you can preview windows from the taskbar... go from one window to another in a rolodex fashion... a sidebar not unlike the Mac has). You have to have a video card that supports AERO to enjoy these features.
With Vista, the minimum requirements I would suggest having is a dual-core processor running 2GB ram and a very high end video card.
Is it worth it? Not in my opinion. XP will work fine for 99.9% of the people out there and Vista just looks like a way for vendors to sell more hardware.
Additionally, Linux is coming out with the same features as Vista, with compatibility (which has always been a problem) with as much or more hardware than Vista, and is not being supported by Dell and HP.
If you have XP... stay with it. If you bought a new computer and it has Vista, hope you bought a computer powerful enough to run the new features it has. If it does, enjoy what Vista has to offer.

I think Vista is the biggest ripoff Microsoft has ever released. It still has so many bugs and they did not give other companys the time to release update drivers. And on top of everything, unlike other windows you can not downgrade.
