Nascar is the fastest growing sport in America. I know people who follow their team and root for their favorite driver religously. I've watched a few races, but I can figure out the sport. There must be more to it than just driving around in circles and I'd imagine there is some sort of strategy. Can anyone explain it to me? I'm making a fool of myself looking like a poser. I think I might actually like the sport if I knew what the heck was going on.

The concept is rather simple in theory;Be the first car across the finish line over a designated distance or number of laps.
Strategy, most definitely.Racing is all about the tires and smooth
execution of the turns by means of braking and use of the gas pedal.Ultimately you want the life of the tire to last the full distance your able to run on a tank of fuel.If you push the car to early in a (fuel)run the tires will wear out and you'll end up slowing down .What you want to achieve is consistancy that is fast lap after lap.
There is a ton of other things I could explain like aerodynamics
gear ratios, shocks ,springs, alignment etc...But I'd prefer that you become a fan by going to your local stock car track and getting the taste, feel and excitement into your blood .
What state do you come from ? Maybe I could point you in the right direction.

I am from Massachusetts as well,Go to Stafford Motor Speedway in Stafford,Connecticut tonight(friday)7:45 is start time
but get there early.
Some of the best drivers in NASCAR earn there wings at that track.
Even the FOX announcer MIKE JOY cut his teeth there when I did my short stint in a car.
The Races are even televised on SPEED channel each week.
