How does Google Adsense work? Just started a blog and need help.

I just started my blog this past week, and I keep reading stuff about Google Adsense. How does this work? Do you get to place the ads on your blog or does Google do it for you? Is there a minimum amount of information and/or visitors that you need before you can sign up?
