Ever notice that people on mylot read really far into discussions? Like.. there can be a simple post about something and suddenly they twist it into something else. They always want to give advice too, even when not asked. I am the same way though so I'm not complaining. I think it's like that a lot in real life too.

It is always nice to see mylot members share and put their every thought about the topic, as mylot's main purpose is for us to contribute. I post here to give whatever idea, advice or input I could add. I make sure that I could always put my thoughts relevantly and stay with the subject, I've been doing that for the past 8 months already!;) I am glad that even if we came from different countries and different walks of life, we can still work together in good harmony..
However there are also members here that still post just to earn for money, not for the reason of contributing.

I agree with you raijin! I am new here but I have noticed that some responses are based on earnings and length rather than the topic in the discussion. I don't think that it irritates me, I appreciate the time someone puts into my discussions, but only if it has to do with the topic I am discussing!

Sometimes it makes it interesting, but sometimes it bothers me. Like if someone posted about having a drink or something, for example, and then people start writing responses about how they have a problem or they need to stop drinking and here's why... when they have no idea if that person has a problem or not and that's not what it was about! Thanks for the comment.

My favourites are the ones where people have posted a funny or sarcastic discussion and some people do not get it and then write a whole page, giving that person advise.
I must admit I have seen some discussions where people will only want to give their opinion without really reading the discussion at hand. It can make for interesting reading and sometimes I wonder if they have read the same thing I have:0)

I have noticed that- but I have also noticed the opposite too- Like
only reading the heading and guessing- or speed reading and answering
something totally different than what is asked- LOL so we have all
sorts of mylotters here- : )

I had weird responses from people who barely read my discussion at all.

Yes you are right. I think we are all like that to a point. sometimes people take it too far and it drives me nuts, but I think as humans we all have advice to give, but I am very guilty of giving good advice and not taking it hahaha!

Yeah, I'm the same way. I think my advice is great, but others can shove it (usually) haha

Not everyone is capable of remembering what was in the original discussion, even though it is in front of them when writing, also it may be that they misunderstood the exact meaning of what is written especially if English is not a first language (as a lot of MyLot Members are using MyLot to teach themselves English - I've noticed that some have improved quite a lot from their earlier postings).
Is that the thing you mean? when my response has suddenly jumped to English Language - then someone could put a response in about English Language, but put it in response to your original discussion and not response to what I've written.
That is real life as well - it would be so boring if everyone responded identically.

I have seen other people complain about this. If people want to give advice & twist a simple issue, they shoulkd go tro one of the religious or political discussions that abound.
Some of enjoy My Lot, & may be prepared advice when requested, but a lot of the time we just want to relax & communicate in a friendly manner.

I think that is human nature to try to fix something. I also think it is human nature to get riled up about something when it was ment as a joke. I just responded to your discussion about showering everyday. I realize it was ment as a joke. I did not fine the photo funny because the poor women in the photo was or is inflicted with a horrible disease. I have taken care of people with this disease and have seen them suffer so it just hit the wrong nerve. I know now that I took it way to seriously. I also know that I have done jokes and had someone offended because of my inconsiteration. I feel it was a learning experience.

What really irks me are people getting snippy about advice. I asked a question about my dog and a responder blasted me and told me I needed to take my dog to the vet. Yada Yada. It's not like my dog was lying on the floor dying and the first thing I did was log onto mylot and see what people thought I should do. I mean seriously, I have enough sense to take my dog to the vet when she's sick.

I agree! I am one to give some good advice, but never listen to my own. We are only human and I guess that is the way we will be.

It's too easy to misunderstand another. You take written communication, we can't notice non-verbal behaviour, or sarcasm.

I think you may be on to something. I find that even though I am just expressing my opinion there is a tone of advice in it as well. I have also been known to get off topic some times and have to delete and start over or just say sorry for the rant and then continue on. I try so hard to stick to the subject but there are those times when oops. I am glad that I am not the only one on mylot doing this though. I also find that I may run on a bit when there is a subject that I am really interested in.

I'm probably guilty of over-expounding on a topic once in awhile. I think I just go overboard trying to fufill that "four-lines or more" response requirement (well, not actually a requirement, but you know what I mean). I figure, if someone posts something on here, they are usually looking for similar stories, advice, or just sympathy (you usually get a good dose of advice with the sympathy, though, whether you want it or not :-) so you have to read into it once in awhile to be able to provide enough of one of those things.

It's because we have no lives. =P
No, really, I think it's pretty normal to find yourself taking things in different directions than the original poster intended. I know I always enjoy when it happens on my discussions, because it's like exploring new territory! I love hearing the many different ways in which people can take things, even if sometimes it's ridiculous the extent to which they misunderstood or read into what I said.
I guess that's just the kind of thing I enjoy, personally. It tells me a lot about people and how their minds work. =)

Hello wooitsmolly!:-)
What simple posts you are talking about. There are many types of posts on mylot. You should write descriptive posts if you want to get right replies because only then people will understand. LOL! was I able to twist?
Yes, wooitsmolly, Though I try to read every posts carefully so as not to derail it but still I wonder if I was inline not only with the mere wording but also the intention of posts starter. That's why I sometimes end up asking the poster, if my reply was understandable or made any sense. I think, it's possible to misread the post because of many reasons, more probable is to misread the intention and perspective of the post. I do hope that I didn't misread this post:-)
