How many of you parents tell your children that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, etc. are not actual people? If so, when do you decide to do this? How to you do it? Do you just let them figure it out themselves?

I will always believe in the original purple robed Saint Nick, there has to be some truth to the Christmas legend, or how else would the tradition have survived so long....My ex told our little girl way too young and really did it cruelly and I won't forgive them for it; I will just keep on believing,my lil girl can at least share the enthusiasm with me.

I agree that discussing this with children too young hurts their spirit and isn't advisable. I read an email that floated around years ago, that I found really good about this. I don't remember the specifics, but it basically said that when you do positive things for others without the benefactors knowing you did it, you are Santa. I thought that would be a great way to explain this to a child. I wish I still had that email.
