I currently work in a residential home for the elderly. I have to say that i have made many elderly friends there. Some are understandably not so friendly, but i still enjoy having conversations with many of them. A lot of people tend to think that the elderly go on too much about things that have happened in the past, and how much things have changed for the worse. I have learnt so much from them. It has given me an education in what life used to be like. All they want to do is share their experiences with those who are willing to listen. All it takes is a little patience and understanding. These are the people that have actually LIVED. It is great to have someone to talk to about anything you like, whether they are elderly or not. I agree with what you are saying, it is a kind of great joy to find such a person. I feel lucky to have so many.

I don't anymore because I lost touch with him, but I used to. When I used to work for Starbucks there was an older gentleman who came in every morning for a cup of coffee and to read the paper. At first, we didn't talk much, but we got to talking being that we were both San Francisco Giants fans. Well, from then on, every morning, I would wait for Carl to come in and get his drink before I took my 10 minute break. I would sit there with him and talk to him and any and everything going on in the world. He talked to me about sports, news, gave me life advice, even suggested nice places to visit from when he was in the military. I really enjoyed talking to him, I do wonder what happened. We lost tough when I went away for school and haven't really heard from him since.
It really is a great joy; for example, Carl has such a different perspective on life and he was more than willing to share it with me. He was also willing to joke around and talk about nothing at all, just talking about it all.
