Fruit for lunch...

I've been having fruit for lunch everyday this week (or brunch I should say since I don't do breakfast) and I noticed that I'm feeling a lot more energized and better then when I was just having a frozen lean entree for lunch every day. I've had things like an apple with 2 tbsp of chunky peanut butter or an apple and some blueberries or an apple and a small plum. I did it mainy because I had forgotten that I'd bought fruits and wanted to eat them before they went bad as to avoid being wasteful. But it turns out that they're really filling and great in these summer months when it's hot out and I don't feel like eating anything.
Do you ever have fruit as a meal?

We bought watermelon and apples. I like peanut butter on my apples. It helps me get my protein in as well..I do feel alot better when I eat fruit..I must get my protein in or I will not feel well at all..inbetween the protein I eat fruit..I don't think it weighs heavy on our stomachs like pasta or things like that..I eat apples to get rid of my headaches also...

Watermelons don't last long. We have to eat ours right away or at least in a day or so from buying it..I've eaten apples with cream cheese too!

mmm... apples and watermelon are some of my faves. The sad part is that watermelon often goes bad at my house. I'll either forget about it or buy a whole one trying to save money and it goes bad instead. In fact I just got rid of one that went back tonight. I think it's because it doesn't have a very long shelf life. Peanut butter and apples rock!

Hush.. with cream cheese? No way. Really? OMG, I have a feeling this is going to be like my tomato sandwhich experience. I never knew about it all my life till I moved to AL 3 years ago and had one. It was so good that I felt like I had been deprived my whole life and could not understand how something so yummy had been kept from me, lol. I went around eating nothing but tomato sandwhiches for months and it was all I could talk about. Mmm... tomato sandwich.

I have never been a big fan of fruits and I seldom have them. But when my mom lives here with me, she is a fruit eater and she bought so many fruits. Sometimes when I don't know what to eat for lunch or dinner, or I am having a not very good appetite, I would eat her fruits as a meal. But then I guess I am still a rice or noodle-eater, I would feel very hungry after an hour or two and I need to find something to eat again. I heard that some of the Japanese would spare a day just eating fruits, so that it would clean out their inner system. I would love to try that someday but I don't know if I could sustain throughout the day *laughs*.

It's true that after a while you do feel like you need to eat again, I've noticed that too. I've never tried it to cleanse my system, I don't know if I could go a whole day on just fruit either, lol.

Me too! I don't think I could live on fruit alone, I would probably get starved or something. I think bread and fruit together would be better.

I love bread and sometimes if I'm hungry but not feeling too good or not like hungry enough for a full meal, then I'll have some toasted bread with the strawberry jam that my mother makes and some fruit with a little bit of peanut butter on the side or some fruit and a slice or two of turkey lunch meat instead of the peanut butter.

Sounds yummy, and energizing, as you said. I certainly hate to waste food. I will sometimes make a fruit salad. I might put some nuts in it, or even some lean chicken, or shrimp. The last time I really lost any weight, I ate lots of fruit and yogurt meals. Have some for me, I love being able to get fresh things at farmers markets.

Thanks, it has been pretty good. Normally we're really bad in the house about wasting food and then complaining on how much it all costs. We'll buy fresh things, get tired and eat processed instead so the fresh things end up rotting. Lately we've been trying to do better so in my effort to save money I ate the fruit and ended up loosing a few pounds but more important being able to keep them off plus I feel like I've lost a few inches. It actually helped me get motivated to loose the weight that I really need to loose not just for my health but for myself. And also to get back into exercising. Who knew fruit could do all that?
And your fruit salads sound yummy!

I've never eaten fruits only for a meal because my stomach is not tolerable to too much acidic the fruit will turn while it is digested. However, I've tried taking fruits with cereal and they taste great as well as giving me ample energy. I often eat my cereal with raisins or fresh fruits cut into small cubes.

Fresh fruit in cereal tastes great, I love fresh bananas in cereal or dried cranberries.

I don't eat fruit as a meal simply because fruit becomes pure sugar (fructose) in the blood stream which causes a blood sugar spike and will ultimately make me feel hungrier when the blood sugar crashes again. If I were going to do something like that, I'd have a small bit of protein to accompany it, to balance out the release of sugar and to provide more nutrition to the meal. Maybe bring along some turkey slices or peanut butter to dip the fruit in. Eating the fruit is a lot better than drinking the juice though, in terms of making you feel full. You're getting the benefits of the fiber from the fruit, and that's good for you. Just don't overdo it. Vegetables are ultimately better in the long run.
