Just got a new kitten

We just got a new kitten the other day and we are concerned about how she is adjusting. We got her on Sunday and she has been hiding ever since. Since the people we got her from told us that she has never been away from her mother and was born an outdoor cat (she's 8 weeks old), she isn't used to people and may take some time to come around. However, she won't come out to drink or eat and we cannot get her to come out long enough to show her where the cat box is. We are concerned that as hot as it's been she may die of thirst, and of course, we are worried about our house starting to stink from her not coming out to use the box. Has anyone experienced this with a cat before? We have tried calling the vet to get this info but they just tell us that unless they see the cat they can't tell us anything (a blatant way to get our money), so we can use any advice we can get.

Well it sounds like she is just scared, and needs plenty of time and peace to adjust to her new surroundings. If I were you, I would put her litter tray in the room where she is, leave plentiful supplies of food and water in the same place, and leave her alone until she feels confident enough in her own "space" to want to come out and explore further. I would assume that she must be drinking something, because if you have already had her for nearly a week, and she is tiny, she would not have survived. In my experience, - I have always had cats and have six at the moment. they hate noise, and strange people around them, and if they're nervous, then they loathe being pulled about, and handled - especially by children. She will need a trip to the Vet soon though - she will need innoculations, vaccinations, spaying and a general health check up. And in my opinion, Vets don't generally just want your money - they go into that job because they love animals and it is a vocation for them - so they genuinely want to help. Good luck with the new kitten.

Thanks for the comment. She will be going to the vet on Monday to get looked at and I'm assuming to have her shots and everything done also. We have moved her from our bedroom into the kitchen area. She still has places she can hide, but she also has a little more quiet and not many people in there, so she's more comfortable to move about freely. Hopefully she'll slowly work her way out of that room and into the rest of the house.

Well I'm sure she will get more confident with time, and that everything will work out for the best.

Gday Mommy
I agree with all the above responses sometimes can take a few weeks before they get the courage to fully come out is just scared by its new surroundings and is perfectly normal when they move to new surroundings.
Like was suggested keep food water and litter near where the kitten is and when house is quiet will come out and do what it needs to if at all possible try have room where cat is in quiet and talk to it with hearing the same voice in a calm reassuring voice will become accustomed to you and then become a nightmare before you know it in a great way.
Don't despair all will be well just matter been patient :) re taking cat to vet they will need to see it to give it a once over as well as give you an innoculation time table.
May you have many years of fun but remember cats don't have owners they have slaves lolol
cheers ozwombat-pete :)

I agree. It's been about 2 weeks now, and she's still hiding quite a bit and still very shy, but she's coming around. Thanks for the comment.

She is obviously petrified and very scared...she dosnt know whats going on, she hasnt been socialised properly at all..She will come out when she feels confident enough...The vet does need to see her because he cannot see if she is dehydrated over the phone or she may have a temperature...If you are that worried about her , maybe try and dribble a couple of drops on her tongue, just be patient..But she should be coming out now...Try and keep the household a bit quiet..

I am another voice in agreement.
Put the things she needs near where she is hiding. She'll drink if it's close and she doesn't have to go out when she is scared.
We had a kitten like that. I kept her locked in my bedroom with me. She had all her stuff and it was fairly quiet. She got used to me, then the rest of the house. It will just take time.

I agree with the other two responses. She just needs some time to adjust. If you know where she is hiding, put the litter box and food and water in the same room. Try to keep everything quiet. It will take some time, but as she gets used to her surroundings, she will slowly come around. If she gets hungry and thirsty enough, and the food and water are nearby, she'll eat and drink.
