I use web directories to get backlinks and then I submit the page my link is on to the major search engines to make sure they know it is there. It even seems like FFA sites that only have your site on their page for a short period of time is actually a benefit not a bad thing like so many people will tell you. The other thing I do is to try to get into blogs. Blogs are archived and therefore are on the internet 'forever'. This has been the best way for my PR5 sites to get backlinks.

Absolutely, the more places your site is out there the better. There are certainly more intricate SEO techniques but to get started... get good content on your site and get it on as many sites as you possibly can.
