Golden retrievers or labs are great with kids. They are very quick learners and they are a very loving breed. They are also protective, but not to the point of being agressive. Whatever breed you decide on, the most important thing to keep in mind is finding a good breeder to buy the puppy from, I don't recommend pet stores or anyone who breeds over 2 breeds of dogs. By finding a good breeder, you will be able to see the mother if not both parents of the puppies and see what their temperment is. Good luck

Just in case .......the pup in my pic is not a choc. lab, although she gets mistaken for one a lot, lol. She is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. And she is now 2 yrs old and still a hand full! lol Although I love her very much I would not recommend this breed for small children or anyone who has not had one or has not read up on this breed. It's the first time I've had one but my guy had one before. They are quirky at times, head strong, however they are smart and can be overly protective.

I agree with palonghorn. In fact this post is, almost, identical to what I had planned on adding. I have had Golden retrievers and labs as a kid and adult. They are both smart, loving, protective dogs that are tolerant of children and their behavior. In fact they seem to shine when they have a child to run & play with. A puppy, from a reputable breeder or dog owner, will be your child's best friend for many years to come.

I think all dogs are good for children as long as you get them when they are puppies and you teach both of them the dog and the child. If you get an older dog I would ask where you are getting it from if it's been around children. We have 3 and they range from a huge boxer to a yorkshire terrier in size but they've grown up with my baby so we have never had a problem.

I think they are. Our boxer is very big to me anyway. She lets my little one ride on her back and everything. The only problem I have is our house is so small and her tail is like a whip when she wags it but I wouldn't change her for anything in the world. She has such a wonderful personality.

I think no matter which kind of dogs to choose.
The importance is to make him happy.

aby dog will be good basically, but in all honesty, the larger dogs are better with kids, not only are the protective but the are gentle, and allow the kids to be rough with them so to say, labs are especially good with kids and so are newfoundlands.

Labs or golden retrievers are great, but I personally prefer a dog with shorter hair so it doesn't look as tho there's a lot of shedding and also for some reason I feel it's healthier for my 1 yr old, so we got him a boxer pup (after MONTHS of research). The thing u have to be careful of is finding a good breeder who will not sell an aggressive dog or a dog with health problems. A lot of thorough breds have health problems and tend to die faster. But a good breeder tries to diminish these problems by sometimes importing dogs from other countries to counter-act inbreeding thus diminishing health problems. However the most important thing is temperament so make sure that u meet both of the puppy's parents before purchasing as that will give you a fairly good clue as to temperament. Our boxer, even tho he was a baby himself as exceptional with my son and never tried to nip at him or harm him in anyway, regardless of what my son did (we always watched him and never let the 2 alone together, so he dint abuse the dog). And boxers are highly intelligent, easy to train, and very protective of the family not to mention the fact that they look so scary to strangers that they wouldn't try harm any of u anyway. Simba was exactly what we needed for our family so I highly highly recommend the boxer breed, but find a reputable breeder, even if it means u have to wait. We waited over 9 months for simba after finding his breeder. And he is the best of the best, top class, show quality boxer. and of course much loved.
