The wise saying of Francis Bacon goes thus "Reading maketh a full man ...." It holds good no matter what the advent of visual media or the computrs pose a threat. Only through reading that we gain mastery over a particular line of thought or descipline. Undoubtful ...there is no substitute for the printed text .

I have to agree with you. No matter how many different forms of media I have I always enjoy reading a good book. Even though I have internet access I still prefer to look at a book for my first source of information on any topic. My father taught me a love of books when I was very young and I will always be grateful to him for it.

I still find some of Dickens books hard going but worthwhile sticking at. Try to pass on your love of reading to others as, I think, it's one of the greatest gifts we can give. I think all readers have hidden under the bedding with a torch and it does at to the pleasure.

Books are very important. Through books we learn a lot but we also can learn from other people as well. I agree that the written word can be very powerful and very enlightening. I also know that when you listen to stories from the elderly about days past you can learn as well. I also think that we learn something new every day. Wheather we are reading books or just talking to others. The mind is constantly working. Reading is good but do not limit yourself to that knoledge only. Expand your horizon and get information from any source you can.

Hi, i agree with you totally, but not everyone will agree. With the expansion of technology and with the computers and net etc there, where we can get the same kind of matter in a jiffy and dont even have to go through a full book, why would anyone want to go through the printed matter? The main thing goes back to how the upbringing has been also. Those parents who read a lot and have books around their house, will have their kids reading from a young age too, and willcontinue to read, the reading habit has to be inculcated right from the start, where as those parents who wouldnt bother much, will have kids not rally taking a liking for reading and they will resort to other easier means and ways of seeking the information. But i for one agre there is no substitute for reading.

I have had a wonderful time reading this summer. I have missed it when I have been too busy for reading. It does fill you up in a different way.

Of course - television, internet, they all take away the mind's own visions and creativity. By reading, we can visualize things on our own. We can come to our own conclusions. If everything is shown to us, we never learn the ability to solve problems, or derive answers.
