What did you do the first time using the internet?

It was 1996 and I was so excited about this new media. I bought a book with address. That was way before Google, that I have to say :)
I found out a mailing list and I told my mother I was talking to someone in Italy. Then I said I was talking with someone in Japan.
She asked me not to do that because we would have to pay a large bill for that.
It was hard to explain to her how the internet works :)
What about you? How did it begin?

The first thing I did when we got online service was to send myself an email to see if it worked. I can't believe how exciting that was when I got the email from myself saying "This is a test." I didn't do too much on the Internet the first few days because we had limited hours and I had no clue what to look for. Oh how things have changed!

The first time I got online was at an ex-inlaw's house. They had just gotten internet access and she had begun visiting a chat room for moms. I watched her chat for a bit and then she let me give it a go. I loved the communication with others instantly. Living in the country, as I was at the time, internet access was less common but I found a local ISP and signed up. I went to a similar parenting chat (although my ex-inlaw had been on AOL and I was not, so they were slightly different). I was eventually asked to be a host, as a volunteer, on the same site. It was a great deal of a fun and a good introduction to the 'net. :)

I think Internet was first invented to US Armed forces and USA used them for its defence reason way back in the end of 1980'S. Then as the world developed into a global village, the Internet was made available to the people. In the beginning, its use was limited to many less people as it was so expensive. The three main servers of the Internet are still in USA. You can say USA still owns the backbone core of the whole world's Internet. USA can shut it down at any time. I was introduced to the Internet in 1999 when I choosed to graduate in computers. The first web page I saw was of http://www.friendfinder.com . One of my college friends introduced it to me. Then he introduced me to yahoo where I made my first e-mail address and then I made one on hotmail too. Now if I think, I don't know how many pages I have visited as I love surfing and getting to know different cultures and people.

Hmh tough questions... As far as I can remember it was 1998 or 1999. There were a few inet cafes in my town. I used to play PC games, but I didn't use the net (because I didn't see a point to pay 50% more to do "something somewhere in the PC".) My mother signup an email and I wanted an email also. I payed for 1/2 or 1 hour and I signed up my first email for the whole time. WOW now I make such signups for less than a minute :). So I think this was my first inet browsing :).

well its was a nice experience for me too... then i never knew that i was about to see some thing that would change the world. It was way back in 1999 when my computer instructor introduced me to internet after taking half an hour trying to establish a dialup connection. The first site he showed me was yahoo.com, then he should me www.kerala.com, (thats the place i belong to) after that he showed how to send an email, i had brought the email id of my uncle in canada when on the previous day he said that he is going to show us internet on the next day. At that time email and all is such a big deal that only few people here knew how to send one... so i was thrilled , and felt really great!
After that i went to an internt cafe, and since it was the time of cricket world cup, the first site i checked was www.espnstar.com where i still remember the picture where steve waugh and his australian team holding the cricket world cup 1999. It took ages for that page to get loaded, and i payed Rs.60 to browse the net for one one hour at snails pace. Now we do the same for RS.15/hour @ 2mbps!

During my secondary education i joined for Computer class. From there i got first chance to experience what is this Internet. Before that i heared about it and i thought it was some thing like lelephone. Then there itself i created a mil id. That day i was really happy that i got an email id. Those days the net speed was so low but now a days the situation is entirely different. Right now i am using net through my mobile. See the difference

Me i began in 2001 but back then, internet connections and cafes were very expensive here in the Philippines like $2.00/hour for computer rental and like $100.00/month for connection and only a few can really afford which is why i spent less hours on the net.Now i can find a place that costs only a dollar and high speed interent connection only costs about aroun $25-30.00 a month here.It has truly become phenomenal
