Why give away money?

Why does the US pour out millions of dollars into other countries. Am I missing something? I don't ever hear where the government gives back our citizens the money that it spends on others. Wouldn't that be great. Headline news everyone in the US will be getting a check for 1,000.00 just for being an American and working and supporting this country. Ok I think I've gone crazy now maybe I need to give this a little break...lol.
