Did your teachers ever mispronounce your name?

When I was a little kid people liked to mispronounce my name. I think some kids did it on purpose just to be annoying. But, it really stung when a full grown adult went out of her way to get the simplest name wrong! You would think an adult would know better. But, I guess not everyone is good with name pronounciations.
Did that ever happen to you? Did your classmates and teachers ever mispronounce your name? Do you think other kids got your name wrong on purpose, just to be mean? What did you say when someone got your name wrong?

All the time. My name is Bridgit, but instead of pronouncing the g soft like a j, I'd get Brid-Get or Brigitte, pronounced in a very annoying french accent complete with rolling 'r', specifically by my very annoying straight-off-the boat-from-the-UK French teacher (figure that one out.. a British French teacher!).
The first one made me the most angry because it's pretty basic knowledge that in front of an e, i, or y, 'g' usually represents the "j" sound, but it was almost as if because my parents changed the 'i' from an 'e' (Bridget is the most common spelling) people just couldn't comprehend how to pronounce my name.
My last name is worse, though. It's Bowles, but I get Bowels, Bow-lez and Bowes all the time. I always know when a telemarketer or market research company is calling because they put no thought into pronouncing names, unlike collection agencies and my creditors. ;)

I have had that happen quite a lot and it still makes me see red. I feel that my name is who I am and if people get it wrong they are not talking to me. I do not mind so much at work as it tends to be the same people and they mean well. I am not very good at remembering names myself so tend not to use them - I hope people don't mind that but I find it better than getting them wrong. I had splash pages made on the internet by two different people and both of them spelled my name incorrectly and it is only a simple 5 letter and 5 letter common English name. How can you run a business like that?

yes, i was during my grade school, high school and even in college, and i really hate it when someone mispronounce my name, whether unintentional or intentional. one should give respect to ones name. if you dont know how to pronounce correctly ones name, you should ask the person how to pronounce it so the person wont be offended.

My maiden name is "Liddle", pronounce almost exactly like "Little". I have had teachers pronounce my name every way you can imagine. As for the students, every joke you can imagine was made (It didn't help that I am almost 6' tall). All I could say when they mispronounced my name is to politely correct them, and the jokes I quickly let them know that they were not very imaginative. All you can do is quickly debunk whatever it is that you do not like and then go on living your life. Anything else just gives them a reason to hurt you.

Sometimes teachers would mispronounce my last name. It isn't easy to say and I would raise my hand and correct them or else they would ask me to say it first and then they would repeat it. None of my class mates ever teased me though.

Not me personally but there were a few people with unusual names in my year. One i remember is Sekinat, we could always count on a new teacher getting stuck on that name, although one teahcer did get it right once which was a shock. On a slightly different subject i can remember someone not knowing how to spell my last name which is really easy.

Hello beautyqueen26,
It is not only my teachers, most of my friends and people who know me for the first time, always mispronounce my name. My name, in my own language, sounds like a fruit's name and so, when I was still a kid, friends love to tease me by calling me the fruit's name. I didn't get angry at them but when my teacher simply teased me when they heard my name for the first time, it was too much to bear. When I grew up, I get irritated when people relate my name with that fruit's name!

Well not my first name, but they always got me confused with another girl in my class. My kids, however, have it rough with our last name Shavatt (Sha-vah_tt not Sha-vat). Most people say it wrong.

I think my last name has been pronounced wrong by almost every teacher I have had, and many of my peers. It is Santacruz, and many teachers say sanchez... Ok the first three letters are the same and they both end in a Z, but I don't think they are that similar. Sometimes a teacher would continue even if I corrected them. One teacher was pretty angry with me once and said "Sanchez or De la Cruz or whatever..." some people are just ignorant and I have seen how people go out of their way to mispronounce it. It is kind of annoying because Sanchez is so common and boring while not many people have Santacruz as their last name. Maybe you have heard of the soccer player Roque Santacruz that plays for Paraguay? Besides that it is quite uncommon.

My maiden name is Tsoukalas and it was very rare if someone got it right. T is silent and the "k" is definitely before the "l". I got so used to it - it was embarassing at first but it happened so often it was commonplace. When people found out my middle name (Olga) that was another story. People initially made fun of it but then they decided it was a cool name and called me that instead of my first name. They called me "yogurt" (to tease) until they realized that their taunts actually didn't bug me. A lot of my classmates ended up calling me Olga, especially my close friends.

My name is joerey and people always mistaken it for a guys name. My teachers mispronounce it accidentally but some of my classmates made fun of my name, they were goofing around with it. At first it hurts but then again i realize its no big deal for me, it taught me the word "ignore" =)

My teacher never mispronounced my first name...normally, they remember it easily but everyone mispronouces my second name because I'm asian so I have a Chinese surname. Nobody says it right. :(
But there are a few other Asian girls in my school as well and sometimes the teacher call me their names. :/

my name has a weird spelling to it and most of my teachers mispronounce my name. but i try to correct them and they listen. also, when i was in high school, there were interactions with other schools and we usually wore nametags. students from other schools would misread my name. i sometimes get frustrated and irritated but it's ok, i guess. i don't think people are really out to mispronounce your name. unless they are really the type who's annoying :) kidding. i think we should just try to be patient and correct them. and if they are really nice people, then they will get it right the next time.
