My ten your old came to me at my sisters house and said mom I have gum in my hair can you help me get it out? I felt it tried to pull it out, but I couldn't so I cut it out.................It was not gum I could have died. It was an engorged tick. He had been at camp the week before. I was really grossed out so I washed my hand and washed it down the sink. You should always keep the icky lil think and take it to the Dr with you. So we took my son to urgent care. The had to scrap his scalp to make sure it was all out. Now he is on antibiotics for a week. The Dr seemed to think it was a dog tick, but kids still need to go to the Dr even if they get a dog tick because they can get different types of infections from those as well. I didn't know that I thought they were the "safe" of the ticks. I just wanted to post something to pass on the info that I got this weekend. Also your best bet if you find a tick is to get them to the Dr right away and have them remove the tick that way you know it is all out. Also when your child says mom I have gum in my hair you may want to cook before you try to cut it out. It really felt like gum....honest it did!

My kids get them at least once a summer here. Their Doctor suggests that we remove them and not worry unless there are signs of redness to the area or fever. However they always advice us to keep the tick once it is removed in a baggy or something and save it for a couple of days. That way if something should arise, we have the tick for them to test.
Here are some steps to follow to remove the tick safely...
Always use a pair of tweezers that you have freshly washed along with you hands.
Place the tweezers as close to the scalp around the tick as possible.
Do not squeeze the tick, just get a good grip on it and pull, NOT twist, the tick up and out.
Apply some antiseptic lotion or cream to the area the tick came out of.
If your child starts a fever or the area turns red or swollen, take your child and the tick to the Doctor ASAP.

Hi there. What a Bommah, You could try using a form of oil, baby oil would be great... Just squeeze it on the area and rub it off, this may take longer, but it beats cutting it all off...
