ibm server and storage

IBM servers are basically a cabinets (genrally referred to as CPU) which are far superior than the desktop PCS , they are superior because of the work they need to carry out. Superior in terms of performance because they have 2, 4 or higher number of processors on a single mobo. Superior in terms of storage because they have more than one hdd (even 4 or greater) connected in RAID for redundancy The relation between server and storage systems is rather simple. Every server has storage capacity , thats the number of hdds connected to it which are usually connected in RAID to avoid data loss as well as to avoid downtime Let me give you an example. You host a site .For this you need some hosting space which for which you will buy some space and bandwidth. Your site is hosted on a server which is infact an IBM server or an assembled one. The space thats offered you by the hosting company is the space on its hdd. Usually such servers have high storage hdds,300 Gb and above . The server not only stores your site content but also many other site's content . Infact a box (server) is usually stated to have around 500 small local sites hosted. Now suppose the hdds crash down then your site would also be down. Now here comes the concept of RAID , when there are two hdds connected in RAID (except RAID 0) there are excat data present on the other hdds too, so even if one fails the other can provide the right kind of backup before the first is one replaced/repaired So here was a small explanation for servers and storage.
