I am an avid reader. I am having a hard time finding the time to sit down and read. I have 4 kids and, I must admit, I have a hard time "blocking out" my surroundings when I read. I try to read daily at least before I go to bed, but how often do any of you read, and what tips can you give me for drowning out the outside chatter and buzz.

Frankly, I don't like reading after graduating from a college. And I think I read too many books in my life. Then i read nothing during past 5 years, but now I like reading, especially when I go to bed, I feel books can calm myself and I can have a sound sleep, so I read a book every night. Now I feel reading is a good habit for everyone.

I must admit, I'm a pretty frequent reader. I just finished the entire James Patterson Women's Murder Club series and I couldn't put any of the books down. I am planning on starting the Harry Potter series next. Yes, I know, I must be the only person in the universe who hasn't read the Harry Potter books yet. To tell you the truth, I got hooked on the movies first and then I didn't want to switch to the books. But now that the final book has come out, I can't wait until 2009 or 2010 to find out what happens. I want to know now!! So, I'm going to start from the beginning and read all the books.
I can't help you with the drowning out part, because its almost automatic when I am reading. I get so into the book that I don't realize what's going on around me. Maybe its the books you are reading, they aren't as interesting as you think! Just a thought!!
Have a good one!

I write, and I believe that old phrase "You're not writing if you're not reading", so I read alot and keep myself invigored towards my livlihood.

I love reading too, from tabloids up to novels!;) I focus my attention by simply ignoring the noise and buzz around me, as if I am the only person on that very particular time. Sometimes if things get into worst, I go to my room and lock it just to enjoy my time reading whatever I have tucked-in between my hands. I also go to bathrooms at times, for me to have a little privacy for the moment!;)
You can do these things, or either you read whenever the kids are asleep already.

when i m attending my classes at university it's really hard to get time to read something even not newspapers but some times i just read staying awake all night and sometimes go to university with the thing i want to read and during intervals i try to read that.but for you it's sure more tough to get time i think.perhaps you can fix a certain time for yourself when you will only read and wont allow any chatter etc in your room or something like that.of course it's not healthy staying awake all night..but perhaps you can try that also.

I love to read too but my house is fairly quiet so I don't have to combat noises and disturbances often which is good because I need complete silence in order to read and comprehend what I'm reading. But sometimes my DH cranks the TV up really loud and it's distracting even when I'm upstairs or outside so I got one of those relaxation fountains from Linens N Things and I play that. Sometimes I just have the water trickling but sometimes I use the white noise feature or the rolling waves feature. It drowns out noises pretty good but even that can be a little distracting at times.
I try to read a little every day on my lunch hour and almost every night before bed.
