I reduce electric use by using a clothesline. I reuse by using containers again. I recycle by making crafts out of things instead of throwing them away. How do you reduce, reuse and recycle?

I reduce by watching how many lights I have on and am replacing them one at a time with energy efficient. I make greeting cards out of old wallpaper books and they are devine. So I recycle. I also belong to a recycling group that passes around things they don't need any more that are in good condition.

Yes if you could do that you wouldn't believe what they post. Kids clothes, lawn mowers you name it and it's free you just have to pick it up.

Oh, it's on the internet you do this? I thought it was just among friends where you live. Wow! This reminds me of when I was a kid. My parents got clothes from my other relatives for me and my brothers. We passed clothes around. They still do skating swaps where I live so skates get passed on to people. Ski equipment has just started and I think I saw a bicycle one. Mostly here, it is one commodity. Then everyone brings one and takes one home. But in general. . .. This is interesting. I'll have to give more thought to this. I love this, you never know what you'll get when you put ideas out there. Thanks again.

I do the first two. The next two ideas are interesting. Greeting cards out of walpaper books, cool! I wonder if I could start a recycling group that passes things around. Thanks for the wonderful ideas!

That's a big savings on your electric use. So you press the work/school clothes, the rest you fold. Charcoal iron? Do you put charcoal in the iron? My parents had a metal iron they used to heat up on the wood stove. Thank you for the ideas. Take care

I reduce electric by using low watt bulbs and making sure that I turn things off when they are not in use. I reuse plastic bags and containers. I also recycle all this stuff when I don't have a use in the home to reuse them.

Great work! I do many of those things, too. We're just starting to get into better/environmental light bulbs. Getting other people to turn off lights when they aren't in the room is a challenge. Thanks for your advice. Take care

Hello Writersedge! I reduce electric use by: 1. turning off electronic appliances after use, 2. my bro & dad have a bad habit of leaving lights, fans & TV on, so I always make sure I have turned them off when these are not in use, 3. In our house we use low watt lights which are bright. I reuse plastic bags & containers. Also, sometimes reuse cooking oil used once. Then, the books I have already read & am not going to use them, I give it to friends or some known ones who would be interested in reading the books or donate it to libraries. We also give my brother's school books to students who can't afford it for free. I recycle Newspapers & old notes by giving it to the person who does recycling of newspapers & books. I too have the habit of making crafts although most of the time I buy new things to make crafts, but i also make crafts with already used things like chart, color papers, etc. Vani^_^

Hi Vani, I believe cooking oil reuse and giving books to others are new ideas for this post. Thank you very much for adding to the knowledge and for your help. Take care

recycle logo - Save the environment
I recycle to a point. I sometimes save milk containers to make lemonade in and when I buy frozen microwave dinners and vegetables I save the containers to heat up leftovers. I have a closet full of used containers.

I like your recycle logo. I save containers, too. I have a closet-full until the holidays, then the containers go home with other people. Gifts of cookies, leftovers from holiday meals, etc. They just come in handy so much. Thank you very much for writing. You're a great friend, you've written on everything of mine that you could. I appreciate that. Smile

I do reuse containers like you did. I recycled some paper containers by converting them to wallpapers because the inner part has a layer of aluminium layer so it can last long for getting wet aspecially in the wash room. Reusing water that was used to wash clothes is the other way for me to reduce wasting water.

Aluminum wallpaper from old containers, interesting and different. You must use environmental washing soap of some kind, how do you reuse your water? Thanks for the ideas. These are definitely some new ones. Take care

one of my greatest creation from recycle material is a wind-chime.I made the wind-chime by using an old unwanted lamp. The lamp has many long dangling cylinders glass hanging on it.I always like the lamp so i have a heavy feeling of just tossing it to the garbage bag.Hence the crystalline cylinders was used on the wind-chime as the main supporter.I repainted it (too add on more color) with nail care (borrowed from my mom of course :)then i hanged some handmade paper(made from old-newspaper) butterflies ,sea bird and some colorful stone.Lol..it turn out really nice. The decorative item is still hanging in my kitchen.

Sounds like you do a great job! We use glass to store dried foods like beans, salt, etc so the mice won't get into it, so we recycle glass for that. So what kind of decorative items do you make and with which recycled items? It's very important to me, too. Thank you very much for being my friend.

Here's how I reuse shoeboxes: Use to store recipes. Tape the lids to the boxes, paint them bright colors, and give them to the kids for building blocks. Use to hold odds and ends--just paint and label. Use to store small children's toys. Make into a dollhouse.

Terrific ideas. If you get the right size, they're great for storing pictures or greeting cards, too. Thanks for responding.

We have reduced, reused and recycled all my life. It is just the natural way of life in our area. We hang our clothes on the clotheline. I even have a clothesline in the house to use in winter. It gets really bad here in winter We put all our grass clippings, veggie and fruit peels (uncooked) in the compost pile. To use in the garden. We have raised bed gardens. We bake in cans. I have posted a few of my recipes for baking in cans on mylot. We sell our soda cans for recycling. We use our newspapers to put down before we put down mulch. It will keep the weeds from growing through and it will turn to soil just as the mulch will. We use old tires to make beds for our rhubarb. We cut them until they lay flat then we put them together with rivits to make them as long as we need them. We use candles to save on lighting energy when we view TV or are just chatting. We heat and cook on a coal heating stove in winter. Saves alot of electic and keeps us very warm all over the house. I love to cook on it in winter and use it for all our cooking and baking needs. In summer, it is too hot to use.

Wonderful! I love Boston Brown bread with raisins in a can. Compost soil is the best! The people before us put tires around their flower beds near the road. We have kept that going. Lots of great ideas. Even if you live the r,r,and r lifestyle, there is always a new idea here and there that can be added. Thank you for your ideas. Take care

I use those fluorescent bulbs, and we put our papers and cans in the recycle bin. Unfortunately I live in a city that thinks that its citizens have too much money and if they can find a way by user fees or not giving the money back from our used papers, etc, they will. I throw the used peels, and veggies on the compost pile. I take the pop cans to my local church school where they take them to a can crusher and use the money for school supplies. I wash out the ziploc bags, I reuse the jars we get the spaghetti sauce and jam in as well as the empty peanut butter jars for storing dried stuff. I do not use a clothesline--haven't got any ---but I do use cold water for washing and no I do not use Tide Cold Water Wash. Sunlight's just as good. I have been doing this since that so called environmental scare came out, which begs me to ask, What will happen once it is over?

Composting is great. I had the best herb garden ever the year we had tons of compost. We seem to be eating out more and making smaller portions with fewer things that have peals or eating the peals now. You're right. I would write things about recycling and get no response or readers. Now I get lots of each. IT does go in cycles. The challenge, for me, is to keep people into it. You do a lot. It really bothers me when I go to people's homes and they are doing nothing or burrying their garbage in the back yard, etc. It makes me happy when I see more being done at a home. Reusing glass jars, I reuse a lot of those. I dry wild and tame plants for future use, esp. as tea.
