Ever feel home sick?

I am originally from Massachuestts but I'm now living in Alabama, I've not been back to MA since we moved 3 1/2 years ago. Lately I have been feeling so home sick. If I could afford to I'd go visit for a while. I miss the area, things like the Boston Common Park and Half Moon Beach and the cannollis from the North End in Boston, or my favorite bakery and of course all the ethnic foods and music that I grew up with. And of course my extended family and my friends that I miss the most. Are you living somewhere different from where you grew up? Do you get home sick? What do you miss?

I was feeling home sick when I went to the states for a few months when I was 19. I just missed the convenience of my hometown offers and mostly the food. It was bad because I was craving for Chinese food all the time! *laughs* I think when we are away from "home", we know how much we love it and miss it and that makes us treasure our home more. I didn't think I would be missing home that much but I am glad I did. I will be away to another country during the year-end too and I am sure I will miss the food around here. I should eat everything before I take off.

I know what you mean, sometimes you've got to leave home so you can appreciate it. I'd never move back there but I miss the food like crazy. Sometimes I'll have an aunt ship me a few things or call in a favor at my old favorite bakery and chocolate maker during the holidays and they'll ship me some items.

Speaking of feeling home sick, I missed my old house when I moved like 10 years ago. It was a vogue memory of how I grew up from where I was. I used to walk to school when I was living at my old home. But for now, I love my current home actually, my parents may not be planning on moving as its very convenient here to get things, travel, and yes, good location.

Boy do I feel homesick sometimes!!!!! I've left Portugal about 22 years ago and never stopped missing it.I can visit, but it's not really the same thing. What I miss the most? My family is all there, I have no one from my own family in here, just hubby's family. My friends. The beaches. The smell and sounds of the ocean - I always lived so close I could go to sleep with the sound of the waves -. The visits to old monuments - and I mean old LOL . The real sweet taste of fruit... yeah I do feel homesick

Oh yes!!! Fresh fresh seafood. There's lots of it here, but the taste is never the same:) LIke you, I don't think I would go back. And it's said because it's not like I'm in a better place, just that I made my life here now and going back would change my life again. I've done that, don't want to do it again. One sad thing I came to learn is that once some of us leave home we become kind of a "not here or there person" we will yearn for the things we miss at home, yet because we made our lives where we are now, we would miss it too if we left. Suddenly we don't belong here or there, we will always be missing something where we are. I know it's a pessimistic view, but for a lot people it does work like that

I know what you mean, I grew up literally across the street from the ocean and now I'm about 6 hours from the closest beach. I miss being at the beach, the sand and being able to just watch the ocean and think or relax. And real seafood caught that day. There are days I feel so out of place. I would never move back though but I'd love to visit.

You are so right, it can be a confusing feeling because you become of unsure of where "home" is exactly. I have my life here and I would miss it if I left, I'm not 100% better off then I was there but if I went back I'd miss where I am now and the difference of lifestyles. When people ask me where I'm from I always have to think about it for a minute, lol, before saying "well I'm from here but originally from somewhere else and then culturally from two other places". For me I'm more starting to feel like where I am now is home and where I'm originally from is more like a part of a life I used to have. I miss it but I wouldn't trade it.

Actually, I grew up in Wisconsin. My three sisters live there. I am the only one that has moved out of state. I left when I was 19. Now that I am older I would like to be closer to my family. We aren't getting any younger..I am going to go there next year and take my grandsons with me. They have only seen pictures of them. They haven't seen my daughter for at least 10 years now and she is 24. The last time they saw my son was 5 years ago. He is 19. I don't ever think that I will move there, but I will go visit as often as I can..I miss my family.

I hope you get to enjoy your visit next year! I miss my family too, I think my mother misses them the most as they're her family (lol, duh) and we have no family here in AL other than my uncle in GA but we only get to see each other maybe twice a year if that much. Right now though to be honest, I miss the food more than my family. Maybe it's because I'm dieting or because I'm stressed and in need of that comfort food but seriously I'd head out to a few places and eat myself stupid as soon as I landed and then go visit family, lol.

Sounds like a plan to me...I think it is all the stress, and dieting and stress spell disaster.

I've lived in the same state my entire life. However, a few years back I went from the U.S to Australia for 3 weeks. Towards the third week of my trip I was really longing for America. Not even my home state... just America! I loved it there, but I just felt so weird. Like so out of touch with the world. I went there alone (I have a friend in Australia) so I didn't have anyone from America with me. I couldn't use my cell phone... I didn't know how to use the pay phones it took me 10 minutes to figure out how to call my parents on my friends phone! I just felt so out of touch. It was the weirdest feeling. Because it wasn't home sickness...it was more...the feeling of familiarity that I was missing. I know America. I know how things work. I know how to use the phone. How to drive. What people are saying (ok..well that's not true but I know english speaking people in americas slang to put it better) and don't have to ask what they mean by that. It was just bizarre.

I have been living in Florida for about 9 years now. My family and I have moved around a LOT. When I was little we lived in Illinois for about 5 years. Then, we moved to Minnesota and lived there for about 3 more years. Then we moved to Florida and lived in an apartment for about 8 months. By the time I got in middle school, we moved again; however, this time we stayed in Florida. We moved to a small town and stayed there for 7 years due to business purposes. We moved again just recently..about 2 months ago. I never get home sick because we never had a permanant home. Hopefully we have one in the future.

I love my home and I would be terrible in your situation. I recently went away for overnight and a day and I got homesick. Sometimes I get homesick when I'm only at work! I have lived in this same community for many years. I've considered moving but I have too many close ties here. I know I'd be back before long.

Wow that is a long time, I can't compare the five months I was at school. But I must say I was not very homesick, maybe because I had so much going on I didn't think about it or have time to think about it. Towards the end I started to miss home though.
