i have this plastic pot where i keep my sugar. it's not airtight, and has a flip open lid.
i poured some sugar in and it was all residing nicely in my high cupboard until one day i left it on my countertop and the next morning when i opened it there were about 10 ants inside!!
i scooped out the ants and portions of sugar and threw them away. Then i put the pot high up again, thinking it'll continue to be alright. but somehow the ants found it again!
So out of exasperation, I put the sugar pot in the fridge. that is one place i know ants don't go! i know that in cold climates i don't see so many ants, and i can leave a cup of sweet drink outside and ants are not swarming around it the next day.
but in singapore where it's warm and humid, ants appear even if it's just as cup of plain boiled water left out in the open overnight!
how did you solve your ants problem if you have ever had one? where do you keep your sugar? in an airtight container?

Well, the only way is to find an airtight container to keep it.
I keep mine in lock-lock container.
Another way is to keep the kitchen really clean and tidy. Throw out your trash promptly and not leave it overnite for the ants to discover.
Even with our meticulous cleaning, we still have ants crawling around our kitchen sometimes. It is frustrating. They can never be totally eliminated.
Sigh~~~~

oh... lock-lock. yeah, but i would rather have a bottle shaped one, not sure if I've seen lock-lock in a bottle shape. anyway, bought one air tight glass pot (quite cute) from ikea, but it broke before we could use it, sigh. fell to the ground and smashed. :(

hm... for containers that you are gonna be using on a regular basis, it is better to get plastic ones.
If you are refering to a long round type of container, you can go takashimaya to check it out.
If not, the brand Tupperware has a whole range of containers of all shape and sizes.

We had ant problems in Samoa all the time. It was hard to avoid if the sugar was left in an airtight container on the bench or high in the cupboard somewhere. We ended up keeping it in the fridge all the time.
They local store sold ant chalk which we use to put all around the edges but because the house we lived in was quite old, it was hard to get rid of them.

thanks for sharing! I bought some ant killer that was supposed to be 'intelligent' at tricking the ants into bringing the poison back to their nests. but unfortunately, that hasn't happened. :(

Just get an airtight container.. *roll eyes*
Either that or you surround the sugar container with water - making something like a moat situation.

I do not use sugar at home but that doesn't mean there are no ants. Like what you say, these little red ants seems to enjoy swimming in my water pot. Perhaps they mistaken that for a swimming pool and just plop in for a swim. Too bad for them, I will just flush them down into the sink. They can swim to their heart's content.

yah! that's the thing! can clean the whole top carefully but they still appear. i just squash them flat. or drown them. whichever is more convenient at that time. heh.
