a simple celebration for the baby with lots of pictures taken can be good. you can show to your baby the photos when he grew up and he'll have the memory of his first birthday because for sure he won't remember it when he grows up so it's a good thing to have those photographs.

My little boy will be one in September as well. (the fifth) We will problably buy him a few things, as far as toys, but he has an older brother so he has some toys to grow into. I would like to get him something specifically for him, like a blanket engraved with his name on it, or something like that. SOmething special that will be a reminder of the occasion, and that he'll use for years and cherish even longer. I will also, prob. buy him some clothes, or something I wouldn't normally spend the extra money on, so he can have some things all to himself. Congrats to your birthday boy.

On our kids first birthday we did just celebrated it at our home in a simple way he suffered with fever at that moment of time and it was just our love and care with warm hugs and kisses were his first gifts on his first birthday and i think the everlasting love a good number of kisses and warm hugs wishing him his birthday is the best gifts of all others from parents would work.

My daughter was 1 in June & although we didn't get her heaps, we got her a few cute things that she got to open herself & enjoy unwrapping/tearing the paper!
We got her some scented Care Bears, we got her a toy phone that she can pull along, some board books (which she loves), a doll with a heart beat, an Elmo musical guitar etc - we didn't spend a lot but she loves them all :)
We also had a party for her, at her Nanna & Papa's place with her own cake that had Eeyore on the top, some balloons & other things she could enjoy - we also got heaps of photos!
Just make it a fun, colourful day & take heaps of photos :) Gifts aren't important but try a musical instrument if you want something fun - like a musical one or something like a xylophone - something that makes heaps of noise!

my baby boy will also be celebrating his first birthday a few months from now. i am not really worried about gifts to give him coz i dont think he could already appreciate or understand these things. well the party will be an effort for me financially and its my best gift for him. im saving up for it and religiously planning for it. i want it to be a successful one coz its the only gift i will have for him on his birthday. he might not appreciate it on that day but for sure he will have photos to see that we had been happy on his first birthday and his mom made that effort especially for him.

When my children came to have their 1st birthday I decided I wanted to get them something that they could keep and cherish when they were older. My eldest daughter got a lovely pink musical ornament with a glass shaker and a pink carousel horse. My youngest daughter got a musical Peter Rabbit ornament. My son got a bright and colourful harlequin jester ornament.
I found that the 1st birthday was much more exciting and special for the family and is probably the biggest milestone for you as a parent as they grow somuch in that first year.
As others have said, take loads of photos to look back on but above all ENJOY.

I got my son a small ride on John Deer Gator. He could push it with his feet and ride on it all over the house. His grandparents got him push toys that help him get better balance with his walking and of course they had to get him toys that light up and make lots of noise and he loved them all.

I feel like I am the one having my first birthday when my daughter turned one year old last march.. I cannot think of a birthday present.. All I know is that, I am going to give her a party, I documented all the party things, pictures, video, presents and wishes for her birthday, I know that someday, she will see it for herself.. My husband and I agreed to sign up in an educational plan for her the day before her birthday and I think that is the best gift that we think of for her... :)
