Why Mark Waugh did not get the success he deserved?

As I know, Mark is the most versatile and talented and most natural cricketer of the modern era. If you see his batting, bowling or fielding, all are simply effortless. Still he didn't have too many centuries like Sachin or big scores like Lara. Was the reason behind this his casual way of playing?
