How do you name your cat(s)?

Do you consider a cat's or kitten's personality? Color of fur? Your name preferences? Which is most important?
And would you agree that a given name might not match or suit a cat at all?
For example, my sister or her friend named a tiny white and black male baby kitten, Pepe. As Pepe matured, he became nasty and mean to me and my sister....but not to my sister's boyfriend! Pepe sat on his lap, allowed himself to be pet and pampered. That cat even kept two large dogs at bay!
On the other hand, my Tabitha, a Persian mix (I think) was the sweetest, most gentle and lovable cat that I have ever owned. She loved attention too.
I don't think that either cat's name matched him or her very well, but that's only my opinion.

Their personality. And I usually choose non-gendered names.

I feed quite a number of cats within my estate, but two female cats are my favourites. One day, my wife suggested that we should give them names that are easy for us to remember. Well, one of the cats have black and orange stripes on her body, so my wife suggested we call her Tiger and the other Lily. The names together give us Tiger Lily, which is a flower found here. But I figure the cats don't really know their names, because we have been calling them for 2 years now, and sometimes they don't respond to these names. More often, I think they are more familiar with our voices and our footsteps when we are nearby, and come running after us.

What I do is pick a few names that I like for the gender and I ask the cat which name it likes. I know it sounds weird but the name that the the cat likes the most it will nod its head to say yes and laydown and fall asleep. This has happined with every cat I have owned.
We currently have 3 cats 2 boys and 1 girl. The 2 older ones we adopted from a local shelter and they were kittens at the time so they didnt have names already. The male for some reason I kept saying he was too precious so I asked him if he wanted his name to be precious and he said yes.
My daughter wanted to name the female so I started running off female names for her and she picked the ones she liked and then asked the cat and she picked Alexis.
The baby is also male and we recently adopted him. He is all black and I have always wanted an all black cat. Well I asked my friends of a list of names and then I ran them past the kitten and he picked Onyx.

Well the two oldest which are brothers we named from appearance, one is Tiger and the other is Bear. Bear when a kitten had long hair that was cream color and with a short stuby tail. When he would play he looked like a bear. Now the youngest cat we have we named her for her personality which is playful. When we seen her with the litter, she didn't think twice to come up to us and start swatting. :oD

I prefer human names for animals. My younger brothers' and sister's cats are called Shaggy, Princess and Smokey. I wanted to call Princess 'Faye' simply because she looked like a Faye to me. I wanted to call Smokey 'Ally' because it suited her. I just think human names give them more personality. My dog is called Eddie, my fish is called Anna and my hermit crab is called Jock. My guinea pig was called Todd and my rat was called Lucca. I think most times you can just look at them and see what they should be called. Naming pets is one of my favourite pass times!

here in the philippines miming and meow is how we call the cat if we dont know their names and the cat really wanted it. they fallow and answer your call if call them that way.it really nice to see your cat know her/his name so before i give them final names i will try first if it would acknowledge it. i have the oldest cat named tingku.he was too small when my sister found him in the street with bad children making fun out of him.tingku here is the inverse name kuting means kitten. i wanted to call him kitten cause he was really a kitten by that time, 1-2 weeks old i guest.but i was thinking that ke will not remain kitten so i cant call him that name when he get old and for sure he never wanted to change his name by that time. so i decided to call him tingku instead and he really loves it. when ever i call my name he alwats answer me with stares.he loves to talk and he is the most talkative cat i've ever seen.now tingku is 4 years old. i also had a kitten named em-em. i found her aouside the mall named MarketMarket.we are about to watch last full show movie then when we passed trough her.i told my boyfriend, now my husband, that if the kitten is still there after we watch the movie it means that the kitten is for us. so she is and we took her with us. i named her after the mall and its (MM)em-em. my friends laugh once they hear the story. all of my cat have different story about how they got their name, but the most important is i asked them if would acknowledge the name before i finalyze it..

I find that they almost name themselves...but for me it's definitely a personality issue. My first 2 are brother and sister-both little rascals when we got them. So we have Loki-the god of mischief, and Darla-a "little rascal" girl. The dog we didn't name-but Georgia suits her very well-although I did change the spelling. Somehow, Jorja seemed to high-brow for her. :) And then there is the youngest kitty, Grace-who is grey but isn't always so "grace"-ful. So she's "crazy Gracie" most of the time.
