all about "white lies"

ever heard of the line "better to tell white lies, than hurting someone with the truth"? ocassionally, i have done it myself, if only to spare someone of embarassment and shame if you told him/her of the truth.... are these white lies valid or just the same, do i make myself bad because i did not tell the truth?
